Message From the President
by Ellyn Mortimer
It's time for the talk...
Do you want a synagogue on Maui?
Do you want a full time rabbi?
Join and donate today.
If you want a Jewish Congregation on Maui, you need to give and join today. Not next week or month, but today. Before we continue our work on a refreshed JCM, we need to know that it will be supported...if you have a money tree , we'll gladly take that too!
I am optimistic that I am not the only person who wants a synagogue with a full-time rabbi on Maui... now is the time to step forward and show that you want one too.
- Join or renew your membership by June 20, and you will receive a $25 certificate to Five Palms or the JCM Judaica store.
- Make a donation above and beyond your membership, and it will be matched up to $20,000. We have a donor who will match whatever you give... so if we can raise $20,000, we will actually get $40,000!
- Join the 1800 Club and pledge $18/month
We are working on a warm, welcoming, community-driven, egalitarian, non-affiliated (accepting to all), vibrant, full-time conservative(ish) rabbi, executive admin, services, kosher, parties, holidays, classes, speakers, safe, beautiful, inspiring, loving shul...and it all comes with a hefty price tag. That's just reality.
Our goal is to have an administrator who along with the board and rabbi will set up and maintain a sustainable income model for our synagogue. It will always include each of us making a financial commitment, and we will not always be in the critical financial situation we are in today. Until we get to that point, we all need to make the decision if we are willing to step up to make sure we have JCM at all. If you don't want JCM, we will stop volunteering
For me and you, and our children, and visitors...the only egalitarian congregation on Maui...are you in, or we out?
With gratitude and aloha,
Ellyn
p.s.. My membership is up in September, and I renewed today, paid in full.
p.p.s. For those of you wondering about why we don't just ask our major donors... we need to show our major donors that our shul is worth their investment. If we all renew and grow our membership, they will see how dedicated we are in keeping JCM, and they will feel more confident joining us.

Words of Wisdom
by Sam Shnider
This week we read Parshat Behar, one of the final readings in Leviticus(25:1-26:2). The portion begins with the description of the Shemittah, or Sabbatical year. The Torah directs us in a particular relationship to the land - and teaches us that we never truly possess it.
Six years you may sow your field and six years you may prune your vineyard and gather in the yield.
But in the seventh year the land shall have a sabbath of complete rest, a sabbath of the LORD: you shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. Leviticus 25:3-4.
