Pesach

Apr6

How will this night be different from all other nights? Let me count the ways!

I find comfort in knowing that in this time of uncertainty, we will all be doing the same service in just a few nights. That's my favorite part about a Pesach Seder (seder means order); that there is an order to the service. We may add our own traditions and rituals, but our basic seder is the same. Having an adult life away from my family, this always gave me great comfort, and this week it will again give me great comfort to know that although we can't sit together, we are still connected in the sameness of our Seders.

I wish you a meaningful, healthy, and safe holiday week.

Hag Sameach, Ellyn

Below you will find some resources for online seders, haggadot links, and some funny "jokes", etc.

This has been a tough few weeks for so many of us, filled with uncertainty; a time when we would come to our Jewish community for comfort and support. It was not easy to close our shul and cancel our community seder; we want to be here for you when you need us. Our online services were a great success this past week - see what else have planned on our new virtual site here.

It is important during these downturns that we have sustainable income so that we can be here for years to come for you, our children, and any Jew who lives on or visits Maui.

Your gift of $18 each month gives us a boost in our sustainability, for times just like this!

JOIN THE CHAI LIFE RIGHT NOW...

You can make sure inclusive Judaism continues on Maui.

(For Type select 1800 club,  for Pay this amount select indefinitely)

We know many people in our community are affected by these economic times, and we know that many nonprofits are reaching out looking for support. We hope that your synagogue is high in your list of important organizations to support now and always. Please join the $18/month program, and if you can make a greater gift to JCM to help us through these hard times, Toda Raba.

Fun Fact: If everyone who received this email signs up for this program we would raise $9000 per month!

JCM Virtual Jewish Life Center

JCM has a Facebook Group to serve as a virtual Jewish community for us during the COVID-19 crisis.   JCM Virtual Jewish Life Center  includes resources, classes, and discussions focused on topics of Jewish life.

Live This Week in the Maui Virtual Jewish Life Center:

Wednesday, March 25 6:30pm  Social Meetup and Kibbitz.  Grab a lemonade or iced tea (or whatever) and let's all "meet" and check-in to see how we're each doing. For all of us huggers out there, this is the next best thing!

Thursday, March 26, 5:30pm Virtual Town Hall Meeting to discuss the needs of our community and how JCM can help support you during this lockdown and beyond.

Friday, March 27, 5:45pm  Kabbalat Shabbat

Sunday, March 29, 5:45pm MinchaService with Kaddish

ALSO:

Bake Challah with Foodies Dania and Lily Katz.

Whether you bake every week or want to learn, join us on Friday for some baking fun. We are still working out all the details, a separate email will be sent with more details.

Play Mahj with MauiEllyn online here.

You need your own card to play...and Ellyn is looking forward to some cross-country games.

Plus ongoing discussion and Jewish life resources.

To participate, be sure to "Like" our Facebook page today!

Do you have an activity (yoga, art), class (Hebrew, how to win at the stock market), anything you'd like to lead online while we are all on island lock-down? Such a fun way for all  of us to learn, pray, and play together from wherever we are! Contact Ellyn at admin@mauijews.org to talk about how to stay engaged.

This brings us to a new information structure! The weekly newsletter feels like an outdated way to give information, sometimes we have information to share at different times... Now that we are so hip and current (I think that makes me outdated), we want our information to reflect this. Rather than a Tuesday newsletter, we'll start sending information as needed. If this doesn't work, we'll go back to a once a week newsletter, but this is all so new to us, let's just try this a new way as well!

What's Happening with the Building?

Hip Hip Hooray!!! Services are scheduled for this weekend inside at JCM.

Good News :)

We can be in the building...the light and airy building will be a place we all want to come and pray, celebrate, and socialize. We can't wait for you to see it.

We have new energy efficient toilets in both restrooms...which will help us save water.

Stay tuned for a chair dedication to order new chairs that are easy to clean and are eco-friendly. Don't worry. the nameplates on the current chairs will be put onto a plaque in the synagogue.

Bad News :(

Things aren't quite done in the building. There is still lots of construction happening during the day, but the building can be used when needed.

When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (the German word for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners. Risking his own life, he uses his privileged position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive. One day in July 1942, Lale, prisoner 32407, comforts a trembling young woman waiting in line to have the number 34902 tattooed onto her arm. Her name is Gita, and in that first encounter, Lale vows to somehow survive the camp and marry her.

The fifteenth of Shvat, or Tu B’shvat is a holiday that focuses on trees, and for the Kabbalists the tree stood for the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden, and for the Tree of Sefirot (divine emanations, each one a different aspect of Hashem).

Kabbalists in the community of mystics in Safed began to observe a Tu B'Shevat seder in the sixteenth century. The Kabbalists taught that it is on the New Year of trees that The Tree of Life/ Sefirot renews the flow of the life and divine energy to the world. They felt that it was the responsibility of those who grasped the mystical knowledge to help this process, which they could do by eating different kinds of fruit and saying blessings and relevant verses over the fruit to free the divine sparks hidden within them.

Shayna Naveh will be leading a Tu B'shvat seder again this year. If you attended last year, you know how special this event is. Our Tu B'Shevat celebration is scheduled for 6:00pm-8:00pm on Sunday February 9, at Heritage Hall in Paia, 401 Baldwin Ave.

What's Happening With the Building?

The building project is coming along, but not without major issues (shocking, I know) both building and financial.

In order to dry out the water quickly, we needed to pull out the carpet, the baseboards, and a bottom section of the drywall that is against the floor. We noticed that our electric system was not only outdated (we can live with that) but also bare wires and electrical boxes simply dangling not attached to anything. These needed to be fixed up for the safety of our building. We also decided that the layers of paint and wallpaper should be stripped and the walls cleaned thoroughly before adding a new layer of paint. In the kitchen (where the leak started) the appliances are all fine, but the cabinets were ruined. Our wish is to have stainless tables and cabinets in there.

It was found during the A/C installation that the ceiling is not to code, and for commercial use (we have a re-zoning issue coming up), we will need to be in compliance. This involved two things...1. Adding a new layer of sheetrock to the ceiling to give it the depth it needs (they went into the kitchen today, and when they made a small hole in  the ceiling, they noticed a huge rat nest, and the decision was made to pull the whole ceiling down instead of simply adding a layer). 2. That the structure of the ceiling is not reinforced properly and is not secure (if you noticed cracks in the ceiling, this is part of the reason for that). We are fixing both problems and adding insulation, and these are not covered by insurance.

Our building has no smoke detectors and we are adding them now along with improved and more efficient lighting.

As in so many projects, when the walls open, all the problems. This is a public building, and this is beyond pretty floors and new paint. This is health and safety of all who come into this building. The insurance money we recoup on the leak will not help with anything happening with rodents in the ceiling and fixing electrical and adding smoke detectors, etc.

We have a generous donor who will cover the cost of the upgrade to vinyl plank flooring... can you help also?

Please consider a donation to help us cover the costs of making this building safe.

A New Look For Beit Shalom!

As a result of the water damage resulting from the water heater leak, Beit Shalom is getting a much-needed makeover.  We are working with an excellent contractor to do this work. The flooring is being replaced with beautiful and durable vinyl plank.  The walls are being stripped and repainted in a neutral contemporary color scheme that will look gorgeous with our recently dedicated Ner Tamid.  The kitchen is getting new cabinets. All contents are being removed from the building and put into a temporary storage unit in the back during construction.  Contents will be sorted and cleaned before being brought back into the building.

The building is currently a busy construction zone.  We ask that you do not stop by to visit until construction is complete.  It is simply not safe to casually be inside the building during this time.  Work will hopefully be complete within two weeks.

We had enthusiatic, uplifting and well attended Shabbat services last week led by Rabbi Ryan at the Four Seasons.  Toda raba, mahalo nui loa, many thanks to Marc Bromley, General Manager at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea and a member of JCM, who generously stepped forward to arrange a conference room at the Four Seasons to hold Shabbat services.

We will be at the Four Seasons again this coming Shabbat.  Please join us at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea Friday evening at 6:00pm for a family-friendly Kabalat Shabbat. Shabbat morning services start at 9:30, with Barchu at 10:00, and Torah Service at approximately 10:20. Man Plans, G-d Laughs

We got a big dose of G-d's laughter this week!  In the middle of preparing for our interview week with Rabbi Ryan, our water heater sprung a leak. The result was a small flood, forcing us to close the shul building while we make repairs.
