Hodesh Tov, Happy New Month of Adar I. I am pleased to have arrived on Maui. The Oral Torah (Mishnah Shekalim 1:1) says that "On the first of Adar they make a public announcement about the shekels - (Israeli currency)." This was a time to remind the people that they are to prepare their annual monetary offering to the Temple treasury, that was known as the half-Shekel. Our Torah portion this week Terumah (Hebrew for 'contribution') opens with the Eternal asking Moses to: "Speak to the children of Israel, and have them take for Me an offering; from every person whose heart inspires him to generosity, you shall take My offering." (Exodus 25:2). "Giving from the heart" has been a membership model that JCM recently incorporated. Giving from the heart results in building a Sanctuary for the Divine Presence.
