Story Time.....
Last Friday, we faced an unexpected situation that resulted in the last-minute cancellation of Shabbat services. Since we were unable to communicate this change in time, we had an arrival of visitors -Gavriel and Shayna Strauss with their two young daughters. Upon informing them of the cancellation, Gavriel stepped up to the bima to lead an impromptu Shabbat service, joined by our longtime member, Joe Narrowe, to accommodate those who wished to participate both online and in person.
We are grateul to Gavriel for leading last week's service and for offering to lead Shabbat services this week as a mitzvah.
Please join us to welcome back Gavriel and his family back to JCM.
Gavriel Strauss is a Spiritual Counselor and Relationship Coach who supports his clients in a somatic oriented process of healing and integration, on a path toward actualizing a more empowered Life Vision and Sacred Purpose. Gavriel is trained in IFS: Internal Family Systems therapeutic model, and is ordained as a Mashpiah (Spiritual Director/Companion) through ALEPH Ordinations Program. Gavriel organizes, facilitates and leads the Nelson Jewish community in Shabbat and holiday services, gatherings and rituals.
Having lived in the mountains of Tsfat for 6 years studying with some of the great modern Kabbalists, Gavriel is steeped in the Jewish mystical tradition. He weaves this knowledge together with progressive spiritual and therapeutic methods to form a comprehensive Jewish model of personal growth and tikkün olam (holistic healing of the world) called Path of Tikkün.

An important message on behalf of the Jewish Congregation of Maui Board of Directors
Dear JCM Community,
We are looking to grow our membership to 100 families by mid April or we will begin the process of closing The Jewish Congregation of Maui forever.
We hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. We are writing to you on behalf of The Jewish Congregation of Maui, a sacred space that has served as a pillar of strength, peace, and togetherness for so many of us. As we face an unprecedented challenge, we turn to the very heart of our past to determine if our house of worship continues to provide value to you.
Our temple is facing financial hardship, and now, more than ever, we need your help to continue the work that has been passed down through generations. Whether it’s our worship services, educational programs, community events, or outreach efforts, the temple plays an essential role in nurturing the spirit of compassion, faith, and service to others. However, the cost of maintaining our temple and its programs is a constant challenge.
Becoming a member is not just about supporting us financially—it’s about becoming an integral part of a vibrant and compassionate community. When you join, you help ensure that our doors remain open for those seeking solace, connection, and inspiration. Your membership will enable us to:
*Maintain Our Sacred Space: Preserve the physical and spiritual sanctity of our temple for generations to come.
*Expand Our Programs: Support religious, educational, and cultural programs that nourish the minds and hearts of all who attend.
* Serve Our Community: Enable us to continue our outreach to those in need, providing support and fostering love and understanding. Being a member also offers you opportunities to engage more deeply in the life of the temple through volunteerism, leadership roles, and participation in events that bring us together as one family.
Even if you don't live on Maui, your presence to join us for Shabbat service or holiday events, means the world to us. We're grateful that we can be your synagogue away from home.
Please consider becoming or renewing your membership through the high holidays of 2026 with an enrollment today. https://mauijews.shulcloud.com/join
Together, we can ensure that the temple continues to be a place of peace, unity, and spiritual growth for all who seek it. Thank you for your time, your love, and your commitment to our community.
Warmest regards,
The Jewish Congregation of Maui Board of Directors and members.

Please join us for this week's evening services- Friday, March 7th led by Cynthia Lebowitz and drash given my Michael Lebowitz.
Cynthia and Michael are a duo of our Fantastic Four who provided us with a joyful Shabbat with their music. Cynthia takes the lead on the guitar and Michael delivers a profound drash.
A little about the Lebowitzes... In 1980 Cynthia began studying the TANACH and met Michael. He also had a love of Jewish history and they began a lifelong study of how to do Hashem’s commandments. Being a lover of history and education they attended CAJE (Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education) conferences and many other Jewish camps to learn. All that they have learned naturally flowed into the teaching of our 2 sons.
Cynthia learned how to play the ukulele while living in Hawaii then graduated to guitar and began leading services when needed with Michael doing the drash.

Midrash in Action is a community discussion led by Sam Shnider. It is open to all levels and backgrounds with the goal of reclaiming sources of Torah, the wisdom that has animated the Jewish spirit for millenia, for answers and guidance on matters that confront us today. Sam will begin each class with four to five minutes of song, then a short teaching (about ten to fifteen minutes), and then a communal discussion of the sources. The class will be held bi-weekly with sources available before the class, so that people can meditate on the sources, and bring their own interpretations.
The sources are riddles, or springboards for discussion, or awakenings for further connections. For each source we ask - What does it say? What does it mean? And what does it mean to us? Ultimately the classes may be compiled into a book of community wisdom for further sharing.
Join us Monday evenings at the Jewish Congregation of Maui Doors open at 6:00pm Class will be from 6:30pm-7:30pm
Tomorrow's class we will study the story of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai - traditionally the author of the Zohar and a great mystic - is here told with a lot of zest and gusto as the story of a rebel, dissident, and activist who undergoes a life-changing experience. Can we read this story as an insight or inspiration for our own paths?
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai also relates closely to the question of spirituality and work. There are added couple sources on this topic which show Rabbi Shimon's position on this question.
Use the following link for the source sheet to guide you through the class: Midrash Sourcesheet

Friendly reminder Midrash class by Sam Shnider this evening Monday, February 3rd at 6:30pm
The class will be held bi-weekly with sources ready about one week before the class, so that people can meditate on the sources, and bring their own interpretations.
The sources are riddles, or springboards for discussion, or awakenings for further connections. For each source we ask - What does it say? What does it mean? And what does it mean to us? Ultimately the classes may be compiled into a book of community wisdom for further sharing.
Monday, February 3rd. Doors open at 6:00pm Class will start at 6:30pm and are an hour long.

Apologies for the SPAM. Additional information for the Midrash class has been added and Yahrzeits has been updated.
Midrash class is a community discussion led by Sam Shnider. The class will be held bi-weekly on Mondays with sources ready about one week before the class, so that people can meditate on the sources, and bring their own interpretations.
The sources are riddles, or springboards for discussion, or awakenings for further connections. For each source we ask - What does it say? What does it mean? And what does it mean to us? Ultimately the classes may be compiled into a book of community wisdom for further sharing.
Next week's class will be on inner direction and the inner voice. Please use the following link for the source sheet to guide you through the class: Midrash Sourcesheet

We were incredibly blessed this past weekend to have Heather Klein at JCM, along with her husband Eli, and their daughter Lila who traveled from Las Vegas,Nevada. Heather, a cherished friend of Meera Kamegai from their days at Temple Sinai Las Vegas when Heather was a child, shared the remarkable story of her grandmother, Rosa Ginsberg, who bravely escaped Nazi-occupied Vienna with her family for Shanghai and then America with only $2.50 in her pocket.
During the Shanghai Angel event, JCM board member Mitch Berman warmly welcomed everyone and expressed appreciation for Heather's sharing of her grandmother's inspiring legacy. JCM President Gabe Crane also acknowledged Heather and Meera for sponsoring this meaningful occasion.
Additionally, Heather led a beautiful Shabbat service, showcasing her wonderful voice with us.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Meera's husband Minao, and the Kamegai-Cositas: Minao's daughter Sharon and grandsons, Akira, Vincent, and Dominc, who handled the preparations for Shanghai Angel and generously donated food from the luncheon to Ka Hale A Ke Ola. Their support was much appreciated in assisting Kalo with the Oneg after Shabbat services. Most importanly, Mahalo nui loa to Meera who graciously provided a wonderful experience for the community to gather, discuss and connect.
Thank you to everyone who traveled near and far to join us for Shabbat and the Shanghai Angel event. Your presence and contributions are vital to sustaining JCM as proceeds were donated to the synagogue. We plan to have more community events to connect in the future so please stay tuned.

JCM Offering:Midrash in Action
Due to success of the first Midrash and as part of the new year, JCM is happy to announce Midrash classes at the synagogue starting on Thursday, January 9th/Tevet 9 5785. It will be taught by one our own board members and lay leaders Sam Shnider.
Midrash in Action will be a bi-weekly class inviting an open community discussion on urgent questions of meaning, purpose, relationships, mysticism and spirituality through a lens of traditional sources. The sources are meant to be a springboard for the discussion, and all levels of knowledge and background are welcome. For each source - we ask - what does it say? What does it mean? What interpretations are possible? And what does it mean to us?
What can we learn of our own selves through delving into Torah teachings? In this class we will look at some sources that speak of the Torah as a model for creation, creativity, and the road map towards discovering the structure of our own selves, our minds, our bodies, our souls, and how our consciousness mirrors the world around us. A link to the sources we will discuss is here. Come and listen, join the discussion, make yourself heard, or read in advance and come with your own opinions!
