Please join us for this week's evening services- Friday, May 2nd led by Cynthia Lebowitz and drash given my Michael Lebowitz.
Cynthia and Michael are a duo of our Fantastic Four who provided us with a joyful Shabbat with their music. Cynthia takes the lead on the guitar and Michael delivers a profound drash.
A little about the Lebowitzes... In 1980 Cynthia began studying the TANACH and met Michael. He also had a love of Jewish history and they began a lifelong study of how to do Hashem’s commandments. Being a lover of history and education they attended CAJE (Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education) conferences and many other Jewish camps to learn. All that they have learned naturally flowed into the teaching of our 2 sons.
Cynthia learned how to play the ukulele while living in Hawaii then graduated to guitar and began leading services when needed with Michael doing the drash.
Doors open at 6:00pm Service starts at 6:30pm Kiddush and Hamotzi to follow after service

Please meet Jacqueline Saper See details below in the flyer
A little about Jacqueline...
"Jacqueline Saper’s award-winning memoir, FROM MINISKIRT TO HIJAB: A GIRL IN REVOLUTIONARY IRAN, chronicles her life as a Jewish woman living in the Islamic Republic of Iran. At just seventeen, she witnessed the upheaval of the 1979 Iranian Revolution and endured eight years under an oppressive regime marked by chants of “Death to Israel” and “Death to America.”
Forced to abandon her Western wardrobe for the mandatory hijab, Jacqueline navigated a society transformed by stringent laws. She survived harrowing moments, such as hiding in the basement as Iraqi bombs fell during the Iran-Iraq War. Through vivid, first-hand accounts, she sheds light on the unique challenges faced by Iran’s Jewish community amid a political landscape hostile to Israel and marked by its leadership’s ongoing support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
In 1987, Jacqueline, her husband, and their two young children fled Iran and were granted asylum in the United States. Her story stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of her Jewish identity and the fight for women’s rights in the face of adversity."
Jacqueline is graciously making a special appearance at JCM as a Mitzvah during her brief visit to Maui, despite the short notice. While donations are not mandatory, they are always appreciated and greatly assist JCM in overcoming its financial challenges.
Mahalo. We look forward to your presence.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in our Passover seder. It was an amazing turnout and a deep sense of community filled the synagogue. A special thank you goes to the volunteers from Hale Kau Kau, Church of Latter Day Saints, and Ellen Levinsky, along with Minao and Meera Kamegai for their generous donation towards the cleaning of the synagogue and kitchen.
We also appreciate contributions from Eskimo Candy and Maui Farmer's Market. A big shout out to Mitch Berman for kashering our kitchen and to Rabbi Mendy from Chabad of Maui for his gift of Shmurah Matzah. Additionally, we also commend Sam Shnider and Cynthia Lebowitz for leading a vibrant and engaging seder. Kudos to our chef - Jade Arnold who hails from Threes Restaurant.
We would like to shine the spotlight on an exceptional yet humble individual who consistently goes above and beyond, not just for Passover but for all JCM events. From assisting with set up, food preparations and clean up to recruiting family and friends to assist. Combined with her dedicated spirit, she has made a remarkable difference. We are delighted to recognize JCM's board member - Barbara Cooper for another successful Passover seder. Mahalo, Barbara; your unwavering support at the Jewish Congregation of Maui is truly appreciated.
Here are some moments we've captured from our seder. If you have any photos or videos from the seder that you'd like to share, please send them to jcmmauijews@gmail.com or post them on our Facebook page, Jewish Congregation of Maui - Beit Shalom.
May you and your loved ones continue the celebration of Passover! Chag Sameach!

A message from Mitch Berman JCM Board Member
As Passover approaches, we invite you to join us on Saturday evening, April 12 and to update you on the status of Jewish Congregation of Maui (JCM). For nearly four decades, JCM has been a cornerstone of our community, once the island's only synagogue. A recent letter addressed our challenges and concerns for our future, highlighting the critical moment we face, much like standing before the Red Sea. During Passover, a time that symbolizes the journey from slavery to freedom, we must focus on nurturing our community and fostering joy in our unique Hawaiian setting. The arrival of the first Torah in Hawaii in 1886, brought by businessman Elias Abraham Rosenberg, reminds us of our rich heritage and the importance of embracing the Aloha Spirit while honoring our Jewish identity.
As we confront multigenerational trauma and rising antisemitism, we must promote compassion and understanding. With the upcoming departure of our dedicated executive director, Kalo Yujuico, we need to envision our next steps amidst challenges like COVID, the Maui Wildfire, and internal divisions. However, we have valuable resources, including a fully paid building in Kihei, which we can enhance for future generations.
As a community, we still have much to celebrate and be grateful for: - Our fully paid building in Kihei is a strong foundation with room for enhancements. - Our school is poised for expansion, offering exciting growth opportunities. - Our Friday night services feature diverse Rabbis and enriching Saturday services.
We have successfully hosted remarkable events and services, thanks to the efforts of Barbara, Sam, Capn Dave, Cynthia, Rabbi Ken, Rabbi Daniel, and Kalo who will be greatly missed. In response to the Maui Wildfire, we provided financial support to affected Jewish members through the Weinberg Foundation and Jewish Community Services. Aiko Lindsey serves as our full-time Case Manager, offering vital assistance to those in need. Looking ahead, we are upgrading the synagogue with new fencing, windows, doors, and security cameras, funded by grants from the State of Hawaii and Maui County.
Join us for Passover, where membership offers a discounted rate through June 2026. We invite community members with skills in people, business, and marketing to attend the next Board Meeting and support our rebuilding efforts.
Whether you're at our table or celebrating from afar, may you have a meaningful Passover
Thank you, Mahalo, Toda Raba. Mitch Berman, JCM Board Member.

Story Time.....
Last Friday, we faced an unexpected situation that resulted in the last-minute cancellation of Shabbat services. Since we were unable to communicate this change in time, we had an arrival of visitors -Gavriel and Shayna Strauss with their two young daughters. Upon informing them of the cancellation, Gavriel stepped up to the bima to lead an impromptu Shabbat service, joined by our longtime member, Joe Narrowe, to accommodate those who wished to participate both online and in person.
We are grateul to Gavriel for leading last week's service and for offering to lead Shabbat services this week as a mitzvah.
Please join us to welcome back Gavriel and his family back to JCM.
Gavriel Strauss is a Spiritual Counselor and Relationship Coach who supports his clients in a somatic oriented process of healing and integration, on a path toward actualizing a more empowered Life Vision and Sacred Purpose. Gavriel is trained in IFS: Internal Family Systems therapeutic model, and is ordained as a Mashpiah (Spiritual Director/Companion) through ALEPH Ordinations Program. Gavriel organizes, facilitates and leads the Nelson Jewish community in Shabbat and holiday services, gatherings and rituals.
Having lived in the mountains of Tsfat for 6 years studying with some of the great modern Kabbalists, Gavriel is steeped in the Jewish mystical tradition. He weaves this knowledge together with progressive spiritual and therapeutic methods to form a comprehensive Jewish model of personal growth and tikkün olam (holistic healing of the world) called Path of Tikkün.

An important message on behalf of the Jewish Congregation of Maui Board of Directors
Dear JCM Community,
We are looking to grow our membership to 100 families by mid April or we will begin the process of closing The Jewish Congregation of Maui forever.
We hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. We are writing to you on behalf of The Jewish Congregation of Maui, a sacred space that has served as a pillar of strength, peace, and togetherness for so many of us. As we face an unprecedented challenge, we turn to the very heart of our past to determine if our house of worship continues to provide value to you.
Our temple is facing financial hardship, and now, more than ever, we need your help to continue the work that has been passed down through generations. Whether it’s our worship services, educational programs, community events, or outreach efforts, the temple plays an essential role in nurturing the spirit of compassion, faith, and service to others. However, the cost of maintaining our temple and its programs is a constant challenge.
Becoming a member is not just about supporting us financially—it’s about becoming an integral part of a vibrant and compassionate community. When you join, you help ensure that our doors remain open for those seeking solace, connection, and inspiration. Your membership will enable us to:
*Maintain Our Sacred Space: Preserve the physical and spiritual sanctity of our temple for generations to come.
*Expand Our Programs: Support religious, educational, and cultural programs that nourish the minds and hearts of all who attend.
* Serve Our Community: Enable us to continue our outreach to those in need, providing support and fostering love and understanding. Being a member also offers you opportunities to engage more deeply in the life of the temple through volunteerism, leadership roles, and participation in events that bring us together as one family.
Even if you don't live on Maui, your presence to join us for Shabbat service or holiday events, means the world to us. We're grateful that we can be your synagogue away from home.
Please consider becoming or renewing your membership through the high holidays of 2026 with an enrollment today. https://mauijews.shulcloud.com/join
Together, we can ensure that the temple continues to be a place of peace, unity, and spiritual growth for all who seek it. Thank you for your time, your love, and your commitment to our community.
Warmest regards,
The Jewish Congregation of Maui Board of Directors and members.

Please join us for this week's evening services- Friday, March 7th led by Cynthia Lebowitz and drash given my Michael Lebowitz.

Midrash in Action is a community discussion led by Sam Shnider. It is open to all levels and backgrounds with the goal of reclaiming sources of Torah, the wisdom that has animated the Jewish spirit for millenia, for answers and guidance on matters that confront us today. Sam will begin each class with four to five minutes of song, then a short teaching (about ten to fifteen minutes), and then a communal discussion of the sources. The class will be held bi-weekly with sources available before the class, so that people can meditate on the sources, and bring their own interpretations.
The sources are riddles, or springboards for discussion, or awakenings for further connections. For each source we ask - What does it say? What does it mean? And what does it mean to us? Ultimately the classes may be compiled into a book of community wisdom for further sharing.
Join us Monday evenings at the Jewish Congregation of Maui Doors open at 6:00pm Class will be from 6:30pm-7:30pm
Tomorrow's class we will study the story of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai - traditionally the author of the Zohar and a great mystic - is here told with a lot of zest and gusto as the story of a rebel, dissident, and activist who undergoes a life-changing experience. Can we read this story as an insight or inspiration for our own paths?
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai also relates closely to the question of spirituality and work. There are added couple sources on this topic which show Rabbi Shimon's position on this question.
Use the following link for the source sheet to guide you through the class: Midrash Sourcesheet
You are also welcome to join us by visiting: Zoom Link Meeting ID: 528 461 9173 Passcode: 1818
If you have any questions, please contact Sam Shnider at samshnider@gmail.com.
Mahalo for joining us.

Friendly reminder Midrash class by Sam Shnider this evening Monday, February 3rd at 6:30pm
The class will be held bi-weekly with sources ready about one week before the class, so that people can meditate on the sources, and bring their own interpretations.
The sources are riddles, or springboards for discussion, or awakenings for further connections. For each source we ask - What does it say? What does it mean? And what does it mean to us? Ultimately the classes may be compiled into a book of community wisdom for further sharing.
Monday, February 3rd. Doors open at 6:00pm Class will start at 6:30pm and are an hour long.

Join us Monday evenings at the Jewish Congregation of Maui Doors open at 6:00pm Class will start at 6:30pm and are an hour long.
Use the following link for the source sheet to guide you through the class: Midrash Sourcesheet
