"Two years later, Tree of Life shooting survivors are making the victims' memories a blessing...
Audrey Glickman is drawing on the words of a friend who “always said that everything in life takes two years to heal.” Ms. Glickman — a survivor of the Oct. 27, 2018, attack at the Tree of Life / Or L’Simcha synagogue, which claimed the lives of 11 worshipers from three congregations — knows it’s not as simple as turning a page on a calendar. “Some of us, as a collective, are still healing,” said Ms. Glickman, a Tree of Life member. “We had different levels of injury to begin with. But I’m ready to move on, to carry this forward and make it positive.” When Jews say of the departed, “may their memory be for a blessing,” she said, the word “for” is crucial — moving from memory to future action. “The people we lost have a legacy,” she said. “It’s on us now to continue to not only build ourselves but build on the legacy that was left to us.”" Read the rest of the articlehere.
JCM joins in the mourning and remembering of the lives of those who were murdered at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburg on October 27, 2018...two years ago today. ___________________
We are member-supported Judaism
On my commute to and from Kula this week, I have been listening to NPR, who is doing their fundraising drive. Always one to "borrow" fabulous wording... I say, we are member-supported Judaism.
Unlike other Jewish communites on Maui and around the country, we are sustained only by our members.
We hope that egalitarian (we are the ONLY place on Maui a girl/woman can be called to the Torah), pluralistic (for all Jews, accepted not just tolerated), and welcoming (we truly are happy to have all Jews together, no matter how they connect spiritually or culturally) Judaism on Maui is important to you. We are the only one.
For all of us and our children and grandchildren... please keep JCM on Maui, we need this Jewish option.
Join as a member, make a donation, become a sustaining Chai Life- $18/mo donor... we appreciate all donations for our sustainability on Maui.

Bar & Bat Mitzvah Program JCM has always been an egalitarian synagogue. Girls have always been welcomed to read from the Torah, any time... Did you know we're the ONLY place on Maui where girls can be called to the Torah?
This is important. Our girls are equal and included in all aspects of the lifecycle event...this is crucial for both our boys (who we are raising to be good citizens) and our girls. We are proud to include any boy/girl/nonbinary person who wants to enjoy this rite of passage.
Our new program, run by Sandra Razieli, will likely begin in November.
This is more than a "teaching" class...this program will help truly prepare our children for their personal journey into Jewish adulthood in our kehillah (community).
Please let me know at admin@mauijews.org if your child will be having a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in the next year or so...we will reach out with the details as soon as they are final. ____________________
Chanukah December 10-18
