The events have been set and the complete schedule will come out next week. We are excited to invite the greater Maui community to attend these fun events every night of Chanukah! There will be something for everyone, and we can't wait to celebrate together.
Talmud Torah - open enrollment Wednesdays 5:00pm - 6:00pm We had a dozen students start last week from ages 6-13. They had lots of fun.
Our Mission: Our school seeks to inspire children to develop a rich Jewish life through a love of pluralistic learning and developing friendships in a diverse community.
It was wonderful to see so many congregants at the Board Meeting on Wednesday night... A reminder that board meeting minutes, monthly financials, and independant financial audits, are available for logged in members on our website. We are a trqansparent organization that welcomes questions. This is your congergation, we just run it.
If you don't know how to log in or you have an issue, please email Ellyn at admin@mauijews.org
LOOK AT OUR KITCHEN AND LANAI!!!!!
The major construction is finished...Bill has some small finsih work (trim and solar lights on the top of the posts) and painting left, but we're basically done. They are both now ready to use and we cannot wait to share it with our community.
The funding for this project came from the work Mitch Berman and Ellyn did with Nitzavim (you can learn more about Nitzavim here). We wanted to use the funds in away to create a more comfortable, expansive, and welcoming community space. We did it!
The board has approved a naming opportunity for each of these spaces. If you would like the honor of naming and dedicating these new spaces, please reach out to Ellyn at admin@mauijews.org or 808-276-1526.
There will be a wish list for items to complete these spaces as well coming up...believe me, I'll let you know!
Book Club Monday, Nov 21 10:00am Wailuku Email board@mauijews.org to get the address.
And After the Fire : a Novel by Lauren Belfer
A powerful and passionate novel—inspired by historical events—about two women, one European and one American, and the mysterious choral masterpiece by Johann Sebastian Bach that changes both their lives.
Torah Portion: Chayei Sarah - The Danger of Rumors
There is a legend (Midrash Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer) among our people that tells that when Abraham returned from Mount Moriah, after he nearly sacrificed Isaac, and was stopped by an angel, Satan became furious as he had wanted Abraham to sacrifice Isaac.
So, Satan found Sarah, Abraham’s wife, Isaac’s mother, and asked her, “Did you hear what happened?”
“No,” she replied.
Satan lied: “Abraham took Isaac and sacrificed him, offering him on the altar as a sacrifice.”
Sarah wailed and moaned. She died.
Let us attempt to empathize with Sarah. She was completely alone, with no one except Satan, who was manipulating her emotions and lying to her, pushing her beyond the point where she could handle being alive. With no one to comfort her, with no sense of how she could move on without the child she longed a century for, with a husband she would never be able to bear to be around, she felt there was nothing to live for. And so, she died before learning that her son was still alive. READ MORE HERE
