If you don't give today, how can we be here tomorrow?
You may not need us every day, or even every week. But when you want us, you need us to be here.
Please give a gift to JCM as we wrap up 2022. We rely solely on donations/memberships to pay our bills, the Rabbi's salary, and programming. Your gift now will ensure that our dynamic leadership team has the resources we need to be here for you and your Maui Jewish community.
Give with joy, give with pride, give today.
P.S. We're not spending money and using resources to send out letters, this is this our ask and our reminder to you that we do not exist without you.
In honor of the reconciliation between Joseph and his brothers
"We are not mad. We are human. We want to love, and someone must forgive us for the paths we take to love, for the paths are many and dark, and we are ardent and cruel in our journey." -Leonard Cohen
Looking Within
Genesis 44:18 Then Judah went up to Joseph and said, "בי אדני - It's within me my lord, let your servant appeal to my lord, and do not be impatient with your servant, you who are the equal of Pharaoh."
The beginning of the reconcilliation between Judah and Joseph occurs when Judah appoaches Joseph directly, not through arbitrators, messengers, or other indirect routes. Although he doesn't know that it is his brother Joseph he is standing in front of, nonetheless, he lifts his gaze and speaks directly to him. He points a finger at himself and says, "it is within me" - I will take responsibility for what has happened.
Joseph is seeing Judah take responsibility and it clearly plays on his heart strings. We may not be able to change the past, but we can let the past guide us to make better decisions in the future, and this is what Judah has accomplished, by looking within.

Zoom Short Story Book Club with Laura Shulman
Laura Shulman is planning to host a zoom short story book club. You are all invited to join. If you are interested, please email her at lauragshulman@gmail.com with your telephone number and your preferred day and time for the book club. She will contact you.
The short story book club will meet monthly on Zoom. At each meeting, we will read and discuss one story from the Best American Short Stories 2021 edited by Heidi Pitlor, published by HarperCollins, and available on Amazon.
Please buy the paperback edition for $16.86 so that we can easily refer to page numbers in the text. Before the class, Laura will send you some discussion questions to consider while reading. Laura uses a method called Shared Inquiry in which we agree not to refer to any other work or personal experience, but to base our interpretations on the text alone. Laura asks that you read the story twice so that you can support your opinions with evidence from the text and respond knowledgeably to other participants' ideas.
We will read the stories consecutively so that if you miss a month you will know which story to read for the following month. The stories are very stimulating; discussions will be lively; and sharing our ideas will make us a cohesive group.text goes here!
