Special Spiritual Evening after this Shabbat Saturday, January 21 at 7:30pm at JCM Havdallah & Melava Malka: A Spiritual Evening with the Schachters
Come and join us to learn some Torah from Rabbi Shlomo Schachter and his wife, Ahava Zarembski-Schachter.
Rabbi Shlomo Schachter received his Smicha in 2014 from Rabbi Riskin of Efrat after spending nine years studying in Israel. He identifies as a Modern Orthodox Breslever Chassid and strives to draw on the experiential piety of chassidut in order to face the challenges of the contemporary world.
Ahava Zarembski-Schachter received her Master's Degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. She moved to Israel in 2001. Ahava is an expert in post-disaster relief. While studying at Nishmat The Center for Advanced Jewish Studies for Women in Jerusalem (for 7 years), Ahava worked in Israeli policymaking giving recommendations to the Prime Ministers Office.
Today the Interfaith Talk Story took place at JCM with clergy and leaders from all the different religions on Maui. These gatherings discuss ways to provide safe spaces for members of our LGBTQIA+ community and visitors to our congregations. A wonderful outcome has been the design and production of pamphlets, created by Rev. Kerry Kiyohara of Makawao Hongwanji Mission, for LGBTQIA+ persons who attend Buddhist services statewide. It is a great resource for all of us from a variety of religious backgrounds as we consider developing similar resources, and actively seek ways to provide safe, welcoming havens within our congregations. We at JCM will be modifying the pamphlet with Jewish sources so that all can feel welcome in our place of gathering.
There are many needs of those who are feeling voiceless and vulnerable here on Maui. Do you have ideas/thoughts/concerns to bring to the table? Please email Rabbi Raanan (rabbi@mauijews.org) if you would like to be part of future initiatives that will share inspiring dialogue.

If you don't give today, how can we be here tomorrow?
You may not need us every day, or even every week. But when you want us, you need us to be here.
Please give a gift to JCM for a successful 2023. We rely solely on donations/memberships to pay for dynamic programming, our bills and the Rabbi's salary. Your gift now will ensure that our dynamic leadership team has the resources we need to be here for you and your Maui Jewish community.
Give with joy, give with pride, give today.
P.S. We're not spending money and using resources to send out letters, this is this our ask and our reminder to you that we do not exist without you.
"And Moses spoke so to the children of Israel; but they listened not to Moses for anguish of spirit and for cruel bondage." (Exodus 4:9)
When the going gets tough it is sometimes difficult to listen to our leaders. We seek to blame someone for the difficulties that we are experiencing and it is easiest to point a finger at our leaders. After all, if they were better leaders, then we would not be in this situation in the first place. It is important to remember that vision does not manifest overnight. That is the main message of what we experienced in last week's Torah portion: that yes, life can seem absolutely hopeless and we are still called to believe that change is possible.
Moses' message is one of freedom, ending slavery and leaving for a legendary promised land. No matter how great his message may have been, it has to reach the intended audience successfully. If it does not, it becomes a soundbite that goes in one ear and out the other. There is so much noise and promise, especially in our modern era. "Buy this and your life will be better." Many great ideas have fizzled out of our collective consciousness because they were not able to convince a critical mass of people.
Talmud Torah - open enrollment Wednesdays 5:00pm - 6:00pm We have a dozen students from ages 6-13 in three different classes. It's not too late to join the learning and the fun!
Our Mission: Our school seeks to inspire children to develop a rich Jewish life through a love of pluralistic learning and developing friendships in a diverse community.
