If you don't give today, how can we be here tomorrow?
You may not need us every day, or even every week. But when you want us, you need us to be here.
Please give a gift to JCM for a successful 2023. We rely solely on donations/memberships to pay for dynamic programming, our bills and the Rabbi's salary. Your gift now will ensure that our dynamic leadership team has the resources we need to be here for you and your Maui Jewish community.
Give with joy, give with pride, give today.
P.S. We're not spending money and using resources to send out letters, this is this our ask and our reminder to you that we do not exist without you.
Terumah: Giving for the Future of JCM I would like to thank Joe Narrowe for his help with this week's Torah portion
Our Torah portion this week is Terumah ("gift" or "offering") and it tells of the Eternas instructions to make the Tabernacle and its furnishings. I have always found it beautiful to note that the entire Tabernacle was built from free will offerings from all the Nation of Israel. They were not forced to give, but gave from their hearts so that the Tabernacle could be built. The Jewish Congregation of Maui's (JCM) membership model, Giving from the Heart is built along this same principle. And why? Why should someone give to keep JCM going? Well, let's look back over the years and see what JCM has stood for.
JCM was founded in the late 1970s by Jews from diverse backgrounds, practices, knowledge and geographical areas of the world. Meeting monthly at parks, community centers, and homes, they gathered to share Shabbat, religious holidays and festivals together. Being an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, away from mainland Jewish influences, JCM persevered and formed its own Jewish identity becoming a beacon to locals and tourists looking for a Jewish experience. Today we have our own building, rabbi, and weekly Talmud Torah.
JCM is a non affiliated congregation which allows us to attract Jews from all branches of judaism—from those who are religious (not orthodox); to those with little or no knowledge of their Jewish heritage, religion, or culture; to those on the fringes of “accepted” Judaism. We provide assistance to everyone whether local or tourist. JCM accepts everyone equally. Continued here...
