If you don't give today, how can we be here tomorrow?
You may not need us every day, or even every week. But when you want us, you need us to be here.
Please give a gift to JCM for a successful 2023. We rely solely on donations/memberships to pay for dynamic programming, our bills and the Rabbi's salary. Your gift now will ensure that our dynamic leadership team has the resources we need to be here for you and your Maui Jewish community.
Give with joy, give with pride, give today.
P.S. We're not spending money and using resources to send out letters, this is this our ask and our reminder to you that we do not exist without you.
This Wednesday the JCM Teen Gathered We had a fun time making Hamentaschen (Purim cookies) and then ate cheesecake. Stay tuned for our next teen gathering Teens 12+ are welcome to join us.
Tetzaveh (Zachor)
Last week we read about the building of the Tabernacle and this week we meet those who work in it, the Cohens, or the Priests. This is a caste whose sole function is to bring the people closer to their Creator. And they do this dressed in very specific clothing:
"Make sacral vestments for your brother Aaron, for dignity and splendor... These are the vestments they are to make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a fringed tunic, a headdress, and a sash. They shall make those sacral vestments for your brother Aaron and his sons, for priestly service to me." -Exodus 28:1-4
It is interesting that in non-leap years we always read this Torah portion before Purim. There is a direct link between clothes and costumes. Every costume is a form of clothing, and perhaps every outfit is a costume. In Hebrew, the word for clothes (beged) and for betrayal or deceit (begida) share the same root: ב-ג-ד. The word for costume תחפושת also has several meanings. Its root is ח-פ-ש which can also mean "to search." Continued here...
