Tzav: Shabbat HaGadol - Zealotry vs. Compromise
The Shabbat before Passover is called Shabbat HaGadol, “The Great Shabbat.” The first Shabbat HaGadol took place in Egypt five days before the Israelite Exodus.
The Tur (an important Halakhic code composed in Spain by R. Yaakov ben Asher 1270–1340) states:
The lamb was the Egyptian deity. Many Jews, after 210 years of immersion within Egyptian civilization, had also adopted this animal as their god. When the Eternal commanded that a lamb be set aside and tied to the bed for four days in anticipation of sacrifice, the Israelites abandoned their idolatrous practice and courageously fulfilled this commandment in the eyes of the Egyptian people, thereby demonstrating their complete trust and faith in the Eternal. Nothing could have been more abominable to the Egyptians, for their god was to be slaughtered. Nevertheless, miraculously the Egyptians were unable to utter a word or lift a hand. They watched helplessly as their god was being prepared for slaughter. This miracle was a great miracle (nes gadol) and gives this Shabbat its name.
The response to idolatry in the times of the Bible was quite fundamentalist. Our prophets raged against other deities. A famous narrative in the first book of Kings tells of how Elijah stood up to Baal and brought down fire against his opponents. Over time, something changes and this can be seen in the Haftarah we read this Shabbat from the Book of Malachi.
Little is known about Malachi. Some Sages think he was none other than Mordechai from the story of Purim, and others claim that he was Ezra the Scribe, who was his contemporary. Either way, the Book of Malachi is the last book of prophecy, just as prophecy in Israel came to an end in the 4th century BCE, and just before the Sages took over the Jewish scene.
Here are the final verses of Malachi’s prophecy:
“I will send the prophet Elijah to you before the coming of the awesome, grand day of the Eternal. He shall reconcile parents with children and children with their parents, so that, when I come, I do not strike the whole land with utter destruction.” (Malachi 3:23-24). Continued here...
