Matot-Masa’ei: A Journey that calls for us to go from Strength to Strength
The second Torah portion that we read this Shabbat begins with, "These were the treks of the Israelites who started out from the land of Egypt, troop by troop, in the charge of Moses and Aaron" (Numbers 33:2).
We are a nation on a continual trek. We started out as a family in the Holy Land and left to Egypt to become a nation. We then trekked into the Wilderness to receive the Torah and struggle to transform our slave mentality into a nation building mentality. Then we trekked back into the Holy Land and from there into Babylon, Persia, Rome and the rest of the world. We were tasked to be a light unto the Nations, to be universally designated as mentors for spiritual and moral guidance for the whole planet (Isaiah 49:6). If we are going to have this capability, we have to have the wisdom that comes along with it.
This wisdom is obtained through experiencing a journey and realizing that it is more important than the goal. As long as the journey continues, there is excitement, anticipation, hope.
This week Rabbi Raanan, Board Member- Gail Schell and JCM Community Manager, Kalo Yujuico had the honor to attend a reception at the Govenor's Mansion on Oahu hosted by Gov. Josh Green and First Lady Jaimie Kanani Green with the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation to welcome their new board member - Margery Bronster. We had a lovely time meeting leaders of the Hawaiian Jewish Community and the esteemed members of the foundation.
We kindly ask for your presence on Sunday, July 23 at 7:15pm at JCM to honor the memory of Gloria and Frank Dan.
If you don't give today, how can we be here tomorrow?
You may not need us every day, or even every week. But when you want us, you need us to be here.
Please give a gift to JCM. We rely solely on donations/memberships to pay our bills, our salaries, and programming. Your gift now will ensure that our dynamic leadership team has the resources we need to be here for you and your Maui Jewish community.
Give with joy, give with pride, give today.
P.S. We're not spending money and using resources to send out letters, this is our ask and our reminder to you that we do not exist without you.
It is time to renew your membership for 5784: 2023-2024. Notices will be emailed shortly.
Please take a moment to reflect on the value of having a pluralistic, inclusive, community-centered synagogue on our little, remote island.
What does that even mean?
Support of the Jewish life of your choosing- without judgment
We don’t talk about levels of observance
No one is “more Jewish” than anyone else
All have equal access to the Torah and lifecycle events
Welcoming to all with a flexible dues plan
Preserving meaningful traditions and open to creating new ones
A voice in the direction your community is heading
We join in the mourning of Bernice Goldberg ז"ל (Batyah b. Faygaleh v' Menashe), mother of Jacquie Bayley who has passed away
