Welcome to our Interim Spiritual Director...

Sam Shnider!

The JCM Board of Directors is thrilled to announce that Sam Shnider will officially be our interim spiritual leader while we conduct a search for our next Rabbi. Sam has been volunteering his time to lead services and lifecycle events and conduct classes over the past seven months, and we appreciate his commitment to our shul. He has become well known for his scholarship on the Torah and his moving sermons and commentary each week. Stop in for a Shabbat service or a Wednesday night class and say shaloha!

We look forward to having this stability in our synagogue while we search for a permanent Rabbi.

Words of Wisdom

The seventh day of Passover (Shvi'i shel Pesach) is celebrated on Friday and Saturday, with Yizkor at the conclusion of services on Saturday.

The final days of the Passover holiday celebrate the completion of the festival of unleavened bread, (matzot), also known as Hag HaAviv (the festival of spring), see Leviticus 23:10-11:

Message From the President

Happy Tuesday,

The Beit Shalom community seder was magnificent. The shul smelled like matzoh balls and potato kugel all week thanks to the hard work of volunteers Gail and Joelle.  I also found a new tradition of whipping our neighbor with green onions while we sing Dayenu (don't knock it til you try it).  This was my first community seder, and the mix of local residents and Maui visitors was inspiring and a reminder of what being Jewish is all about...community. No matter where we are or where we go, we have a Jewish community. I was so proud to hear from our global guests how happy there were to be at our seder, how they felt welcome, and how much they love out little shul. When JCM does something right, we really do it right.

Join us on Sunday for a discussion with Michael Harris (his bio is below) on how to talk to our friends and  greater community about Israel.

With Aloha,

Ellyn Mortimer

So much of what we hear about Israel, whether on the news or from social media, is confusing and contradictory. But you can learn--from an activist, author, and educator-- how to better interpret what you're reading, and place it in appropriate context.

Dr. Michael Harris was one of the founders of San Francisco Voice for Israel, which is now the Bay Area chapter of StandWithUs, an international Israel education organization based in Los Angeles. He has spoken about Israel at synagogues, churches, political groups and senior citizen centers, as well as standing up for Israel against anti-Israel demonstrators on the streets of the Bay Area. He has appeared on radio and television news reports as a local spokesperson for StandWithUs and SF Voice for Israel. In his spare time, he is a pediatrician in Marin County California. The second edition of his book, ‘Winning a Debate with an Israel Hater’, was published in November 2018.

Elections!

The future of JCM...starts with elections!

Have you read about the new elections?

Who are you nominating?

Have you checked to see if you're a member?

Are you paid in full so you are eligible to vote?

Message From the President

A few thank yous this week...

I want to thank Bob & Marla Weiner for donating the funds to upgrade our security system. We now have more motion sensors, window and door sensors, and cameras (don't worry, we're still Shomer Shabbos). We can control the alarm system remotely which will allow us to retain more control over the access to the shul. We also needed to upgrade our internet to run this new system, and that was also part of the security upgrade donation. Bob & Marla, we needed your help to make this happen, and we appreciate your care for our safety.

I also want to thank Judith for taking the office phones. We are all volunteers at the moment, so having Judith take the phone calls so I can get the office work done and the bills paid is quite a gift. When you call the shul, and Judith answers, thank her for incredible service to Beit Shalom. She is an amazing ambassador for our shul, and we are so lucky to have her.

Whatever you are doing this weekend to celebrate Pesach, I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday...if you'll be at Beit Shalom, I'll see you there. There are still seats available, join us! My family and I look forward to celebrating with our Maui community and visitors alike.

With Aloha,
Ellyn Mortimer

MOON LANDING PARTY...

What a fun night!

Toda and Mahalo Shayna Naveh

for creating, planning, and executing the marvelous Moon Landing Party! The  actual lunar landing didn't go as planned, but that did not stop the celebration at Bet Shalom. With wonderful music, snacks, and lively conversation, we still had a glorious time.

Shayna had an idea to this first non-religious, community event, and it was a success... thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, and supported this wonderful evening. And thank you to Shayna.

JCM IS KOSHER FOR PASSOVER

As of Tuesday, April 9, 2019, the JCM kitchen has gone through a strict koshering process and has been converted for cooking meat in the kitchen for Passover. The kitchen doors will be locked, and there is no access. We have a few things upcoming prior to Passover, and our kosher kitchen will be strictly enforced.

We have a variety of attendees in our shul over these next few weeks, and we are committed to our Kosher for Passover kitchen at this time.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter, and we will report back when it has been turned back into a Dairy Kosher kitchen.

From the President

It's time for a new election...Click here for election information. Please note we are voting on new bylaws on this upcoming ballot.

It has been so rewarding to be part of this renewal at JCM. We are bursting with classes, parties, holiday celebrations, and lots of festivities on the calendar. Be part of this exciting time in our JCM story. I have been looking for a community, I have lots of friends, but I wanted a real community. Over the past few months, I have been overwhelmed with the feeling of community with the new friends and connections I've made, and I finally feel like I have a Jewish community here...and I am so grateful. I feel so proud to be part of JCM.

We all need to make the commitment to be part of this community. My husband thinks I'm crazy for taking so much on (and maybe I am), and it's the best thing I've done this year, and I am so glad I said yes.

This congregation belongs to all of us, and it will take all of us working together (even if we disagree) to ensure that we have a congregation and community. It's for us, our children, and our future... together, we can do this!

Run for office, come to our events, donate... we need leaders, participants, and money in order for us to not just exist, but to thrive. I know times of change and transition can be unsettling, and I know we'll get to other side stronger and better for going through all this together. I will see you soon!

Aloha,

Ellyn Mortimer

Words of Wisdom

This week is the week before Passover, and this Shabbat is referred to as “Shabbat Hagadol” (The Great Shabbat). Why is this Shabbat called Shabbat Hagadol? The truth is that no one knows for certain. The naming of this Shabbat is one of those particular Jewish customs that have multiple explanations, and none that is final and authoritative.

From the President

Are you inspired? I feel inspired every day; I am in awe of all the amazing things happening around the shul. Since I've been volunteering in the office the past 6 weeks, I have been talking to, emailing with, and meeting new people. It's wonderful. Some are people who have been around forever and are just checking in...some are traveling here soon and want a hotel recommendation...some are looking a year in the future to celebrate a wedding or Bat Mitzvah with us...s ome are informing me of a yahrzeit that tearfully needs to be added. And JCM is here for all of you. We are here, we are active, we are responsive, we are busy, we are inspired...and we are here. Yes, I am inspired. Come to our events, and you'll feel it too.

With much aloha,

Ellyn Mortimer

ANNUAL MEETING

Sunday, June 23, 2019

11:00am

Beit Shalom

Yes, we are gearing up for another election!

Details wil be coming in the next week about the nomination process, how to vote, and absentee ballots. Also save the date on May 5 for a Meet the Candidates Town Hall meeting at Beit Shalom. Start thinking about if you would like to join the board or if you know some one who would be a great candidate. A separate email for just election items will be coming.

I had a wonderful Spring break to Disneyland with my family, and I am back and working in the office as often as I can. The office will not staffed every day, however, the phones will be answered. If you leave a message, it will get retrieved quickly.

We have lots of good things coming up...check out the parties and holidays and speakers and festivals and classes. We are proud of our accomplishments in the past few months-celebrating and honoring our past while looking to the future of JCM.

*Just added... we have a great speaker/author coming to Beit Shalom on April 28. Watch for this big announcement in the next newsletter and on our JCM Facebook page.

With much aloha,

Ellyn Mortimer

JCM Board President

WEEKLY SHUL SCHEDULE

Saturday, March 23

From the President

Happy Tuesday. Thank you for sticking with this long post; I have much to share.

I know there is much happening in our little shul, and I want to keep everyone aware about what is happening. The board is thinking that we are doing a good job of getting information to the community, and clearly, we are not. If there is anything that you ever want to know, just ask. I’m sure if you have the question, so does someone else. Once you ask, I can address it personally, and consider putting it in the newsletter if it seems like something others would want to know as well. We have no secrets, we volunteer on behalf of the congregation, and we can tell you just about anything you want to know.

We are getting to the end of Rabbi Glickman’s contract, and there have been questions about his status. I am not in favor of discussing an employee’s medical situation and contract/mediation negotiations…the chatter in the shul and on social media has been ugly and mean-spirited, so I want to set a few things straight. Rabbi announced at the High Holidays in 2018 that it would be his last High Holidays as Rabbi. He had surgery in the beginning of October 2018, and he was out on a sort of medical leave while still getting paid full salary and benefits. In December, he was put on full medical leave while still getting paid his full salary and benefits. A volunteer committee was formed to work with the admin assistant to make sure his admin duties were taken care of while Sam Shnider and other volunteers stepped in to take care of spiritual and religious duties. In January, we received letters from his doctors letting us know that he could return to work with stipulations to aid in his ongoing recovery. We were not confidant that he would be able to do his duties with those stipulations. We continued to pay his full salary and benefits. We wrote an addendum in February so that Rabbi could attend to the end of life care and funeral of a beloved congregant.

The Rabbi is continuing to be paid his full salary and benefits until the end of his contract April 30. We are currently in mediation with Rabbi Glickman over other issues relating to his contract that we both agree can be disclosed in more detail once we have a signed agreement.

We are getting to the end of an era. Rabbi Glickman has been a tremendous asset to our community, and he has led us to this amazing time in our story. He has been our leader, our confidante, our friend, our rabbi, our moral compass, our spiritual guide, our teacher, and most of all, he has been our Rabbi. We need to acknowledge that there is an ending happening in our community. Not everyone will be happy about this ending, and not everything will go perfectly during this transition. We have been in a time of transition for many months, and it is going to continue. We all have the opportunity to decide how we want to deal with this transition and the upcoming changes. We hope you will stay with us and help us in this exciting and uncertain time. If you are having a hard time accepting the ending of this chapter, I understand, and I want you to stay with us.

The board is working with a consultant from CLAL on the East Coast at no charge (for now anyway) on how to proceed forward. We will be working with Elan on conducting some interviews with members of our community to find out what our community wants and what we can provide. This is all a process, and successful change doesn’t happen overnight. Once we work through this time of transition, we will have a new beginning.

Not everything will be different though. We will still be a JCM where all are welcome and prayer is open to everyone who wants to participate. We will be a fully kosher and Shomer Shabbos facility. We will hold community seders and holiday celebrations. We will remain unaffiliated so that all our needs will be met.

Please know that the board will share whatever you want to know. If we don’t know the answer, we’ll find it for you. We have nothing to hide, we want to be transparent, and we don’t know how we’re doing unless we hear from you.

I look forward to working together in this transition and celebrating our new beginning.

With much aloha,

Ellyn Mortimer

JCM Board President

For the Jews it was a time of happiness and joy, gladness and honor. In every province and every city, wherever the king's edict and decree reached, there was joy and gladness among the Jews, with feasting and celebrating...

Words of Wisdom

This week we begin Vayikra, the third book of the Torah, the book of Leviticus. Vayikra begins with a call, as Rashi explains:

AND HE CALLED UNTO MOSES — This implies that the Voice went on and reached his (Moses’s) ears only but all the other Israelites did not hear it).

The call is the moment of beckoning. There is a need for explanation here, because we have completed one book, and begun another. There is a pause, of indeterminate time, between the end of the book of Shemot (Exodus), when the pillar of cloud descends upon the sanctuary, and the revelations of this book, Vayikra(Leviticus). Moses could not enter the sanctuary because of the cloud (Exodus 40:35), so a call must precede his entry.

But the call is also the expression of affection, the sweet intimate call of love. It is the call of the Angel to Abraham to prevent the sacrifice of his child, "Abraham, Abraham" (Genesis 22:11), or the call to the sleeping child Samuel in Shiloh, "Samuel, Samuel" - the whispering voice to this young boy who has not yet discovered he is a prophet (I Samuel 3:1-10). It is a voice that is only heard to its intended one.

The Voice, however, is also the powerful booming voice:

What does it mean by the Voice? It was the Voice that is so minutely described in Psalms, (29:4, 5) “The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaketh the cedars. But if this be so (that it was a very powerful voice), why does Scripture state, “[and the Lord spoke to him] from the appointed tent” (מאהל מועד and does not state באהל מועד)? Because it intends to tell us that the Voice broke off and that it was heard only in the tent).

Thus, the voice has a double nature: inside the tent, it is omnipotent, thunderous; outside of the tent, it is not heard to anyone. It drops off. It reaches only Moses alone, as a still silent whisper, to awaken him and call him inwards. Once he enters the tent, it is the Voice of majesty, the Voice of the all powerful one.

Is it only Moses who hears the Voice? The entire people look to Moses; but Moses's wish, his message, to Joshua his most prized student is "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all God's people were prophets, and that the God would place his spirit upon them!" (Numbers 11:29). Moses wishes for everyone to hear the Voice.

Because it is so. Some have a moment of experiencing the booming voice of the creator of the World, the Voice that breaketh cedars. But each one of us has a moment of the still small voice, the voice heard only from within, that utters our name to us, and calls to come forth, to act in the service of the most high. May we always be guided by that voice, and seek it out.
