Sunday, February 6 5:00pm Chevra Kadisha: Death; What Jews Do Click HERE for details
A mesage from Rabbi Raanan: I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the Jewish Community of Maui for an inspiring Tu BiShvat Seder at the Waihee Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Reserve. I am thankful to the many volunteers who came together to make the day happen. It was impressive to observe how JCM supports Jewish cultural practices in the stunning nature of Maui.
Today is Tu Bishvat, the New Year of the Trees. The Talmud (Taanit 5b) tells of a man who once was traveling through the desert, hungry, thirsty and tired, when he came upon a tree bearing luscious fruit and affording plenty of shade, underneath which ran a spring of water. He ate of the fruit, drank of the water and rested beneath the shade. When he was about to leave, he turned to the tree and said: “O tree, how should I bless you?" “Should I bless you that your fruit be sweet? Your fruit is already sweet.
“Should I bless you that your shade be plentiful? Your shade is plentiful. That a spring of water should run beneath you? A spring of water runs beneath you.
“There is one thing with which I can bless you: May it be Eternal’s will that all the trees planted from your seeds should be like you . . .”
May JCM's sweet welcoming of others be combined with plentiful shade for those weary from life's travels. May the seeds planted among the community grow to become trees that provide communal sustenance for years to come!
Mahalo, Raanan
These shayna punims hiked, swang, played, tasted, built, created, learned, and just had fun at the Tu 'shvat seder.
JCM joins in gratitude at the safety of the hostages at Beth Israel this past weekend. We wish their commmunity and all Jewish communities unity and comfort during this scary and tragic time. This messge from Rabbi Charlie, who was held hostage...a reminder to find the gratitude and helpers in moment of fear and terror. Please reach out to JCM if you feel you want extra support. We are here for you.

Rabbi Raanan's visit is finally here. This is his final interview to see if he is the match to be our next rabbi. We know that COVID cases are surging and we understand if you are not comfortable coming to meet him. We will be on Zoom (keep in mind that sound may not be perfect) and we will have strict protocols in place.
It is our intention that on Monday, January 17, the board will vote on whether to offer Rabbi Raanan a contract and Rabbi Raanan will determine if he sees Maui as his new home. Please reach out to a board member if you have comments, praise, or concerns after any event this week.
In order to be both safe and inclusive during in-person indoor and outdoor events, attendees need to pre-register and show at the door either a vaccination card or a proof of a negative COVID test within 48 hours. Everyone is required to wear a face mask that has two or more layers and completely covers the nose and mouth. Reservations for each event will close 24 hours prior to allow us adequate time for set up.
ZOOM will be used to stream as many of our services as possible. We know that it can be difficult to hear sometimes, and we will do our best to make it enjoyable for everyone.
I would like to think I thought of everything... but if I missed a detail, please ask. I will add to the calendar and descriptions throughout the week...Please check the calendar often.

Rabbi Raanan will be here next week!
Jan 12 -19, 2022
Rabbi Raanan was able to leave Israel (whew) and he is currently in California waiting to come visit our wonderful community next week.
The leadership is in constant (and I mean constant) discussion about the best way for all of us to meet with the current and upcoming mandates and considering the health and safety of our whole community... We have been following the county mandates and the board is currently working on what our protocols will be for these events.
A calendar of events is posted on the websitecalendar. Times and activities are subject to change, but we want you to know the timeline as it stands right now so you can start planning your week getting to know him. Please continue to check the calendar (and of course, I'll post in the newsletter) for changes in times and dates.
Rabbi Raanan is staying close to the shul and is planning (almost) daily early morning Shacharit and tefillin. This will be available by Zoom as well.
If you can help with any of the planning or execution of any of the events (food, set up, clean up, etc.) please let Ellyn know- you can just reply to this newsletter. We can use your help.

Toda Raba to everyone who has made end of year donations to JCM... as we get ready to welcome Rabbi Raanan to Maui for a visit and potentially as our new Rabbi, this means everything, to all of us. These past two year have been hard, flood in the building, covid, rabbi search...and there have been hard decisions to make...and through it all you trusted us, supported us, and encouraged us. These past two years also allowed for us to save for new rabbi, continue lifecycle events with our lay-leadership (4 in just the last week), and learn how to effectively use Zoom to create access for more people.
Most of all, for me, the past two years have shown me how critical it is that JCM is an option for Jewish life on Maui. We are here, for everyone, equally. It's a community I am proud to be a part of. It matters, it's important... and I know it's important to you too.
You have a few hours left to get a tax deduction for 2021... thank you for making JCM an important part of our community. DONATE HERE
You may not need us everyday, but when you do, we're here for you!
Wishing everyone a wonderful 2022 full of joy, health, and happiness. Aloha, Ellyn
Just look at what your kids made in Kulanu! Thank you for being the community we all want and need.
Chanukah, the season of light, miracles, and victory, is past. We have not quite rededicated the Temple like the Maccabees, but during the long siege of restrictions and closures, you have shown us and your community how important it is that JCM is here.
2022 will be incredible. We are excited to welcome a potential spiritual leader, Rabbi Rannan Mallek, for in-person services and meetings from January 12 - 19. More than any other candidate, Rabbi Raanan is feeling like the perfect fit. Just think, in a month, you could meet your new rabbi. Let's do this - together!
Please make an end of year tax-deductible gift to JCM. We are the only Jewish community on Maui that offers equal access to Jewish life to everyone, and that is important! In the past two months, we called three Maui girls to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah, and we have a winter filled with more B. Mitzvahs! Your gifts make this possible. Our new giving model considers all donors as members. While voting member status will still be reserved, we welcome all members to contribute ideas, volunteer efforts, and monetary donations.
To make a donation use this link, mail a check, call Ellyn in the office with your credit card number, or make a request to your donor advised charitable account.
Thank you for your past and continued support … We are so happy you’re here.

Please continue to check the calendar (and of course, I'll post in the newsletter) for changes in times and dates.

Thank you for your patience while we work to make this a meaningful and productive visit for all of us...if you can help with any of the planning or execution fo any of the events (food, set up, clean up, etc.) please let Ellyn know. We can use your help.

I know I confused some of you with my unofficial looking ermail a few days ago. We use ShulCloud for all the admin work of JCM, including email. I have an app on my phone that can send a "quick email" when needed, but it doesn't have the formatting like these nicer emails. We didn't have internet, but I could use my cell service to pull up schulcoud and send out that quick email. I will do better in the future to let everyone know exactly where those emails are from if I need them in the future.
Any changes and additions will be posted on the website calendar.

In October both our Rabbi Search Committee and our Board of Directors interviewed Rabbi Raanan via Zoom. The Board unanimously voted to bring Rabbi Raanan to Maui for an in-person visit so he and our community can get to know each other better and see if we have a shidduch.
Later this month Rabbi Raanan will be offering a series of Zoom classes for JCM. I encourage you attend part or all of this series to meet and learn with Rabbi Raanan.

We are looking for a condo/home rental...either month-to-month or six months. We have a rabbi candidate who will likely be coming for an in-person interview/ get to know us in January (More details coming soon). If he stays, he'll need a place to land when he first arrives. If he doesn't stay, we'll need a place to house visiting rabbis. Our offer of emplyoment either on a permanant, trial, or just once basis will be much more attractive with housing.
Please reach out to board@mauijews.org and let Sheri know you can help.
There are a few immediate wants at JCM, and I have a list on Amazon.
Roomba: Now that we have our beuatiful hard surface floor, we need some serious help keeping it clean. This one sweeps and mops!
Table covers: These stretchable covers are perfect for our Kihei winds and they look sleek and pretty. We'd love an assortment of colors as shown on our list.
It would be amazing if these items were gifted to JCM (early Chanukah gift?). Toda, Mahalo, and Thank You.
