***NEW...TOMORROW, FRIDAY*** Fridays at 11am on Zoom Jewish Prayer 101 Join Rabbi Raanan as he breaks down and teachers hebrew prayers... Make Shabbat Services more meaningful and easier to follow along. This class is great for anyone who wants to learn the prayers and/or looking for a deeper understanding of what you're actually saying when you say the prayers.
TONIGHT!
Book Launch; The Soulution Thursday, May 26, 2022 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM at JCM and on ZOOM
Join JCM and Meenakshi Angel Honig as she launches her new book. We will also hear from Rabbi Raanan's teacher Rabbi Sir David Rosen, OBE, who has been a leading advocate for a vegan lifestyle according to Jewish values. Every bite we take is a vote for cruelty or lovingkindness, devastation or sustainability, disease or health so let’s choose wisely!
Learn 10 compelling reasons to choose a plant-based diet that is kind to the animals, our precious Mother Earth & to human health on all levels. Angel will also offer practical guidance of how to make a graceful, delicious & nutritious transition that is as easy as vegan pie! Vegan snacks will be served.
Led by Mitch Berman and Rabbi Raanan... for all who are grieving spouses, parents, children, friends, etc.
JCM’s Response to the Tragedy in Uvalde, Texas “Do not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor [and their children].” Leviticus 19:16
It is with great sorrow that we respond to the tragic killing of nineteen schoolchildren and their teachers in Uvalde, Texas. We must be committed to the value that children are of greater value than indiscriminate rights to weapons. How have we built a society where driving a car is more difficult than purchasing a weapon?
Jewish values certainly mandate that we go beyond prayers for the lives lost. We must ensure that political action results in the prevention of this ever happening again, although sadly we fear that it will. America remembers all too well the killing of its children in Parkland, Sandy Hook and the hundreds of other locations where mass shootings have taken place.
We must organize and demand that United States politicians, currently obsessed with reelection campaigns, put aside partisanship in order to literally save lives. They must firmly and immediately enact meaningful gun reform legislation and mental health reform.
We offer our deepest condolences and support to all those impacted by this horrible attack and reiterate our vehement condemnation of gun violence. Limiting the availability of weapons is a moral imperative in our time. If we do not do this we are standing idly by the blood of our neighbor and their children.
JCM would like to offer a grief circle on Wednesday, June 8 at 4:30pm led by Rabbi Raanan Mallek and Mitch Berman. The community is invited to come together, grieve and provide comfort to one another during these times when we ask where justice is. ______________________________________________________________

A Sermon by Rabbi Raanan Mallek
The Empathetic Imperative - Kedoshim ואהבת לרעך כמוך And you shall love your neighbor as yourself -Leviticus 19:19 Being commanded to love by the Torah is a challenging theological concept for us to wrap our heads around. How can we be commanded to love? Is this not a personal feeling we manifest as a result of our personal choices? Perhaps the Torah is asking of us something else. The command “ואהבת” - “and you shall love” really means to care for and protect, to be loyal. It is all about how we show love, not with feelings but with action. Read More HERE

Shoah* Remembrance Day 5782/2022 by Rabbi Raanan Mallek
"The Eternal spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they drew too close to the presence of the Eternal" (Leviticus 16:2).
Our Torah portion this week is called Aharei Mot in Hebrew which means, "after the death." And yet, the sons of Aaron, Nadav and Avihu died six chapters earlier in Leviticus 10. After their death, instead of comforting his brother, Moses says, 'This is what the Eternal meant by saying: Through those near to Me I become holy, and gain glory before all the people.' And Aaron was silent." (Leviticus 10:3). Most difficult of all is how Aaron and his sons are told not to mourn the loss of their sons and brothers... Read More HERE

A sermon by Rabbi Raanan
"And the Spirit of the Eternal Shall Rest Upon Him": Traits of Leadership
"The spirit of the Eternal shall alight upon him: A spirit of wisdom and insight, A spirit of counsel and valor, A spirit of devotion and reverence for the Eternal. He shall sense (smell) the awe of the Eternal..." (Isaiah 11:2-3)
How are we to identify traits of leadership that we hope to bestow to our children? Isaiah prophesied that through history we will be able to historically identify a series of repetitive and confirming truths. For Jewish memory, the Eternal’s redemptive acts constitute one such truth, and the source of hope. The festival of Passover is one of many ritual occasions when this truth and this hope are publicly celebrated (Etz Hayim p. 1316)... read more here

Death over Dessert: Jewish Edition turned out to be a successful and beloved event. Eleven JCM community members met and shared honest stories, insights, and concerns around the topic of death. We connected so much more deeply than possible at a social event. This is the essence of a meaningful community; this is what we want to build at JCM.
We are planning a followup event to Death over Dessert. We also want to hear your ideas for topics for future community connection events. Please send your ideas to admin@mauijews,org or call 808-874-5397.
Dear JCM Members, As the holiday of Purim approached and I listened to the news about Ukraine, I couldn’t help but make a connection to the two events. Both elucidate how the desire for power can lead to suffering for many people. I wanted to do my small part to help those who are suffering today so I decided to bake hamantaschen to raise money for Ukrainian refugees. Ellyn enthusiastically supported the project, created a website, and we invited people to come help bake at the synagogue.
Together we raised $1571 that will reach Ukrainian refugees through HIAS, an organization founded in 1881 to help Jewish refugees in New York.
Thank you to all who participated. It was wonderful to be able to use the resources of the building and meet new people while knowing that our work will go beyond our walls. Special thanks to Reuven Gittler, Melisine Alegre, Barbara, Ren and Makaela Cooper, Rabbi Raanan, Sheri McNerthney, and Denise Toledo-Fleetham for their baking prowess and Tim McInerney who did a lot of the behind the scenes clean-up.

The Significance of Eight in Judaism Shmini / Shabbat Parah 5782 Rabbi Raanan Mallek וַיְהִי֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁמִינִ֔י On the eighth day (Leviticus 9:1)
In previous sermons I have discussed how the building of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) was representative of the process of Creation. The seven day week symbolizes the completion of a cycle and the eighth day represents starting over at a new level. As Rabbi Hirsch explains, it is like concluding a musical octave and leading to a higher octave. Rabbi Kaplan explains... Read more here

In 1996, Joe Sugarman bought the property at 634 Alulike Street, Kihei, HI 96753 (our current building) as a favor to his friend who was an active member of Maui Religious Science Center (MRSC). He did this so that he could lease the building to MRSC in order for them to have a place of worship. Unfortunately, MRSC had financial problems and couldn't afford the rent. JCM was a new organization and had been meeting anywhere they could find space.
In 1997, Joel Richman, a founder of JCM and President of the Board at the time, suggested to Joe that he sell the building to JCM at a reduced price, and he agreed. JCM had a fundraising drive, and Arnold Feuerstein (who passed away in 2015) stepped up as the major donor. JCM raised the additional money, and the purchase went through in January 1998. JCM has never held a mortgage on the property. Owning our building outright is an immeasurable gift to the Jewish community; this would not have been possible were it not for the generosity of Joe Sugarman and Arnold Feuerstein.
. We will continue to honor both Joe and Arnold by maintaining JCM as the center of Jewish life on Maui for all who live here and find themselves on Maui.
May his memory forever be for a blessing.

Death Over Dessert - Jewish Edition
Saturday, March 26, 2022 7:15pm at JCM $36 per person
It’s usually too early to talk about death. Or too late. Death Over Dinner - Jewish Edition is designed to break the taboo around conversations about dying. IKAR and Reboot created this with the input of rabbis, theologians, doctors, palliative care, and wellness experts.
Whether you are a Jewish insider, Jew(ish), or Jewish-adjacent, we welcome you to tap into some age-old Jewish wisdom around grieving and ritual, living and dying.
The idea is that talking about death prepares us to approach life’s most challenging moments, and also helps us articulate and affirm who we are and what we ultimately care about, giving us a great appreciation for life.
Please join us, along with our guest facilitator, Kim Moldofsky, for a nosh and conversation. While the topic may sound awkward, these very human conversations range from interesting to profound. In fact, they’re typically empowering and life-affirming.
Let's talk about it - so we can lean into any fears we might have, get rid of inhibitions, and build deeper connections.
About Kim Moldofsky Kim Moldofsky is the founder of Let’s Eat Cookies and Talk About Death. She began facilitating life-affirming conversations about death in 2019 with Death Over Dinner - Jewish Edition. Through these and other programs, Kim creates welcoming spaces that allow for openness, self-discovery, and the sharing of wisdom. She also hosts other creative gatherings that focus on ritual, reflection, and celebration.

Manifesting Encounter and Presence Torah Portion of Pikudei Rabbi Raanan Mallek ר"ח אדר ב' תשפ"ב March 4, 2022 Exodus 40:33-34; 38 When Moses had finished the work, the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the Presence of the Eternal filled the Tabernacle. For over the Tabernacle a cloud of the Eternal rested by day, and fire would appear in the cloud by night, in the view of all the House of Israel throughout their journeys. During the Torah portion of Terumah the Eternal said, “There I will gather with you, and I will speak with you” (Exodus 25:22). The Tent of the Meeting (Mishkan) is not just a place where the Israelities come to worship and honor the Eternal, it is a place of the Eternal’s presence. This is not a metaphor; it is an actual physical manifestation. Thus our forefathers and foremothers in Sinai could visit and dwell with the energy of the Creator’s presence in a very physical way because it was actualized on the physical plane.
