What a wonderful Seder with our local community and many new friends. We loved having everyone together, and we look forward to sharing many more celebrations.
I was absolutely kvelling over the small kids wearing their new Hawaiian print kippot on their way out the door.
I'll spare you the failed matzah ball recipe...Lol! Thank you everyone for your grace in the epic failure and embarassment of the baseball (I mean matzah ball) fiasco of 2022.

Death over Dessert: Jewish Edition turned out to be a successful and beloved event. Eleven JCM community members met and shared honest stories, insights, and concerns around the topic of death. We connected so much more deeply than possible at a social event. This is the essence of a meaningful community; this is what we want to build at JCM.
We are planning a followup event to Death over Dessert. We also want to hear your ideas for topics for future community connection events. Please send your ideas to admin@mauijews,org or call 808-874-5397.
Dear JCM Members, As the holiday of Purim approached and I listened to the news about Ukraine, I couldn’t help but make a connection to the two events. Both elucidate how the desire for power can lead to suffering for many people. I wanted to do my small part to help those who are suffering today so I decided to bake hamantaschen to raise money for Ukrainian refugees. Ellyn enthusiastically supported the project, created a website, and we invited people to come help bake at the synagogue.
Together we raised $1571 that will reach Ukrainian refugees through HIAS, an organization founded in 1881 to help Jewish refugees in New York.
Thank you to all who participated. It was wonderful to be able to use the resources of the building and meet new people while knowing that our work will go beyond our walls. Special thanks to Reuven Gittler, Melisine Alegre, Barbara, Ren and Makaela Cooper, Rabbi Raanan, Sheri McNerthney, and Denise Toledo-Fleetham for their baking prowess and Tim McInerney who did a lot of the behind the scenes clean-up.

The Significance of Eight in Judaism Shmini / Shabbat Parah 5782 Rabbi Raanan Mallek וַיְהִי֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁמִינִ֔י On the eighth day (Leviticus 9:1)
In previous sermons I have discussed how the building of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) was representative of the process of Creation. The seven day week symbolizes the completion of a cycle and the eighth day represents starting over at a new level. As Rabbi Hirsch explains, it is like concluding a musical octave and leading to a higher octave. Rabbi Kaplan explains... Read more here

In 1996, Joe Sugarman bought the property at 634 Alulike Street, Kihei, HI 96753 (our current building) as a favor to his friend who was an active member of Maui Religious Science Center (MRSC). He did this so that he could lease the building to MRSC in order for them to have a place of worship. Unfortunately, MRSC had financial problems and couldn't afford the rent. JCM was a new organization and had been meeting anywhere they could find space.
In 1997, Joel Richman, a founder of JCM and President of the Board at the time, suggested to Joe that he sell the building to JCM at a reduced price, and he agreed. JCM had a fundraising drive, and Arnold Feuerstein (who passed away in 2015) stepped up as the major donor. JCM raised the additional money, and the purchase went through in January 1998. JCM has never held a mortgage on the property. Owning our building outright is an immeasurable gift to the Jewish community; this would not have been possible were it not for the generosity of Joe Sugarman and Arnold Feuerstein.
. We will continue to honor both Joe and Arnold by maintaining JCM as the center of Jewish life on Maui for all who live here and find themselves on Maui.
May his memory forever be for a blessing.

Death Over Dessert - Jewish Edition
Saturday, March 26, 2022 7:15pm at JCM $36 per person
It’s usually too early to talk about death. Or too late. Death Over Dinner - Jewish Edition is designed to break the taboo around conversations about dying. IKAR and Reboot created this with the input of rabbis, theologians, doctors, palliative care, and wellness experts.
Whether you are a Jewish insider, Jew(ish), or Jewish-adjacent, we welcome you to tap into some age-old Jewish wisdom around grieving and ritual, living and dying.
The idea is that talking about death prepares us to approach life’s most challenging moments, and also helps us articulate and affirm who we are and what we ultimately care about, giving us a great appreciation for life.
Please join us, along with our guest facilitator, Kim Moldofsky, for a nosh and conversation. While the topic may sound awkward, these very human conversations range from interesting to profound. In fact, they’re typically empowering and life-affirming.
Let's talk about it - so we can lean into any fears we might have, get rid of inhibitions, and build deeper connections.
Kim Moldofsky is the founder of Let’s Eat Cookies and Talk About Death. She began facilitating life-affirming conversations about death in 2019 with Death Over Dinner - Jewish Edition. Through these and other programs, Kim creates welcoming spaces that allow for openness, self-discovery, and the sharing of wisdom. She also hosts other creative gatherings that focus on ritual, reflection, and celebration.

Manifesting Encounter and Presence Torah Portion of Pikudei Rabbi Raanan Mallek ר"ח אדר ב' תשפ"ב March 4, 2022 Exodus 40:33-34; 38 When Moses had finished the work, the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the Presence of the Eternal filled the Tabernacle. For over the Tabernacle a cloud of the Eternal rested by day, and fire would appear in the cloud by night, in the view of all the House of Israel throughout their journeys. During the Torah portion of Terumah the Eternal said, “There I will gather with you, and I will speak with you” (Exodus 25:22). The Tent of the Meeting (Mishkan) is not just a place where the Israelities come to worship and honor the Eternal, it is a place of the Eternal’s presence. This is not a metaphor; it is an actual physical manifestation. Thus our forefathers and foremothers in Sinai could visit and dwell with the energy of the Creator’s presence in a very physical way because it was actualized on the physical plane.

Weekly Torah Portion VaYakhel Rabbi Raanan Mallek Feb. 25, 2022 Genesis 35:1-2 Moses called the whole community of the children of Israel to assemble, and he said to them: "These are the things that the Lord commanded us to do: Six days work may be done, but on the seventh day you shall have sanctity, a day of complete rest to the Lord… The Israelite community was struggling with a sense of failure after the incident of the Golden Calf which introduced divisiveness and disillusionment. I would hope that the community of nations is also feeling a sense of failure as they watch Russia invade Ukraine. How can it be that in the 21st century humanity is still resorting to state sponsored violence after the horrors that the 20th century left behind? Read More Here
A Message from Rabbi Raanan about Ukraine...
The prophecy of Isaiah 2:4 says the following:
"...[T]hey shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift the sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore."
Our hopes for a peaceful world many times feels like a Sisyphian task (the term describes a task that is seemingly endless and futile.) In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was the founder and king of Ephyra. Zeus punished him for cheating death twice by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill only for it to roll down every time it neared the top, repeating this action for eternity. It seems that every time the world gets closer to the ideal of dealing with its conflicts through diplomatic and non-violent means, more violence manifests and takes over the fates of so many innocents.
Sadly, this seems to be the case as Russia invades Ukraine. We are met with feelings of peril for our broken world. Humanity must evolve to a point where we deal with conflicts in a peaceful and wise manner. After a violent 20th century with two global wars, we are faced with so-called advanced nations that still react like adolescent gangs over territory.
Fortunately, there has always been a proportion of the human race that is more mature, even as there is a minority of childish souls in every society that is still primitive in its outlook. This spiritually evolved spearhead was embodied in prophets such as Isaiah and it would be wise to heed their words. May we see a peaceful consciousness overcome the fears from the past.
Supporting Ukranian Jews...what you can do...
We are following the shocking news from Ukraine with a special concern for the welfare and safety of the Jewish Communities in Kyiv, Chernivtsi, Kharkiv and Odessa. Please support them during this emergency.
1. The Jewish Community in Kharkhiv, closest to the Ukraine-Russia border, is centered around the Sha’alavim-Lyceum Day School, which is being set up as an emergency shelter. Your gift will provide food packages to 150 day school pupils and their families.
2. Families from the Kyiv and Odessa communities will be temporarily housed in the Chernivtsi Community in Southwestern Ukraine, near the Romanian border. Hotel rooms are being rented for them and meals prepared by our Community in Chernivtsi. Your gift will help the community pay for these arrangements.
3. Should the situation deteriorate further, some of these families will be evacuated to Romania, Poland and Slovakia, and from there to Israel. Your support will enable them to cover the expenses of crossing borders to where they will be evacuated.
We should be united in our determination to meet the immediate needs of hundreds of Ukrainian Jewish families, and all donations will be transferred directly to our local community leaders there for distribution.

Sermon by Rabbi Raanan
Tetzaveh 2/11/2022 Exodus 28:15, 29 You shall make a Hoshen of Judgment, the work of a master weaver. You shall make it like the work of the ephod; of gold, blue, purple, and crimson wool, and twisted fine linen shall you make it. Thus shall Aaron carry the names of the sons of Israel in the Hoshen of Judgment over his heart when he enters the Holy, as a remembrance before the Lord at all times. Read More Here

Hodesh Tov Adar 1, 5782 A Welcome Message by Rabbi Raanan Mallek...
Hodesh Tov, Happy New Month of Adar I. I am pleased to have arrived on Maui. The Oral Torah (Mishnah Shekalim 1:1) says that "On the first of Adar they make a public announcement about the shekels - (Israeli currency)." This was a time to remind the people that they are to prepare their annual monetary offering to the Temple treasury, that was known as the half-Shekel. Our Torah portion this week Terumah (Hebrew for 'contribution') opens with the Eternal asking Moses to: "Speak to the children of Israel, and have them take for Me an offering; from every person whose heart inspires him to generosity, you shall take My offering." (Exodus 25:2). "Giving from the heart" has been a membership model that JCM recently incorporated. Giving from the heart results in building a Sanctuary for the Divine Presence. I welcome you all to email me rabbi@mauijews.org to discover ways to give and merit the continual upbuilding of the JCM Sanctuary.
Please Click Here if you or a loved one would like to be added for a prayer for healing each week. These names will not be posted publicly, but they will be read during services. JCM is here to support you and your loved ones, please let us know how we can help.

Mazaltov! I am thrilled to announce that it’s official: Rabbi Raanan Mallek will be joining JCM as of February 1, 2022.
Rabbi Raanan grew up in Honolulu, and comes to us now from Shorashim, Israel. Toda raba to everyone who helped support the Rabbi search process in any way; by serving on the Search committee or the Board, by attending an event, by sharing your feedback. Your patience is well rewarded. Rabbi Raanan is an excellent fit for our community; with him joining us I am confident that we have a fantastic leadership team to build the home for Jewish life on Maui that we all want — a place of meaning, connection, and joy.

Rabbi Raanan made it safely to Vancouver to spend the week with his mom. He wishes the community a Shabbat Shalom.
A Note From Ellyn
It was a great week getting to know Rabbi Raanan and getting together again with some of you at JCM. It makes me really excited for what's ahead.
I won't waste your time... I want you to trust that when I send you an email, it's worth your time to read. So like this week, when I just don't have much to report, I won't.
I'll just wish everyone a wonderful weekend. For those of you not on Maui, I'll enjoy the beach and whales for you. You're welcome ;)
