Mitzvot (Divine Commandments) What are the mitzvot? Where do they appear in the Torah? What is their interpretation? What is their purpose? How have they been a basis for a Jewish life throughout the generations? How can they apply in our lives, how they can inspire us, and what opportunities can they give us to feel a sense of connection? We will look together at some of the sources and think about their meaning and relevance.
Sam plans to start with a general discussion of what mitzvot are and why they are important.

Donations in 2020...bonus tax credit
Did you know that part of the CARES Act gives a $300 tax credit for anyone who donates to a nonprofit in 2020(check with your tax preparer for full details). Usually, people have to give a certain amount for their donations to make a difference on their taxes, the gov't wanted to encourage nonprofit donations...
JCM is a 501c3 nonprofit, and membership is a donation :)
JCM brought joy and gifts to Jewish families around Maui...With a local sponsorship, we were able to hand-deliver gifts to Jewish families around Maui. Menorahs, make-your-own-candles, baking sets, a card game...we were so sad to not have a big Chanukah party this year, and we were so happy to bring smiles for Chanukah anyway! Thank you to the Dorken family for this gift to our community.
Thank you for indulging me with ideas, recipes, funny stuff, videos, etc. this past week. Back to hearing from me once a week :)

Happy Chanukah! Night 2 OY!...We gave my 6 year her big Chanukah gift on the first night, last night. I had to call school today to let them know she won't be there because she wouldn't leaver her new American Girl Doll. My daugher and her doll are sitting with me at shul today...Lesson: Don't give the big gift on a school night.
Kabbalat Shabbat (the receiving of Shabbat) is the mystical prelude to Shabbat. We will begin with a Shabbat mikveh visualization culminating in the Ana Bakoach (a mystical piut designed to liberate us from the captivity of the state of consciousness we endure when it is not Shabbat). We will then sing Shayna's favorite Shabbat song, Yadid Nefesh (a love song to the divine presence) and lecha dodi to welcome the Shechina into our homes and hearts. We will conclude with Shalom Aleichem to welcome the angels. She will put the words up on the screen.

Thanksgiving Is Basically a Jewish Holiday. Here’s Why. By Rabbi Samantha Natov, Nov 21, 2018
I was raised in Canada, where most of the people I knew didn’t make a big deal of — or even celebrate — Thanksgiving (which, in Canada, falls on the second Monday in October). So when I moved to the States some 16 years ago, I was surprised to learn how Thanksgiving is so cherished by Americans. Yet, the first time I sat around a Thanksgiving table with friends and shared words of gratitude, I was struck by how familiar the holiday felt: To me, Thanksgiving seemed to be profoundly Jewish.
While we typically don’t think of Thanksgiving as a particularly Jewish day, it has the potential to be the most Jewish of all the secular holidays. With its focus on gathering as a community, giving thanks, and being mindful, Thanksgiving is infused with central Jewish values. We return to these themes again and again throughout Jewish practice, whether in prayer services, through the study of Torah, or as the basis for mitzvot. Thanksgiving invites us to stop in our tracks and embody these values — albeit in a different, more everyday context.

Bar & Bat Mitzvah Program JCM has always been an egalitarian synagogue. Girls have always been welcomed to read from the Torah, any time... Did you know we're the ONLY place on Maui where girls can be called to the Torah?
This is important. Our girls are equal and included in all aspects of the lifecycle event...this is crucial for both our boys (who we are raising to be good citizens) and our girls. We are proud to include anyone who wants to celebrate this rite of passage.
This is more than a "teaching" class...this program will help truly prepare our children for their personal journey into Jewish adulthood in our kehillah (community).
This class will be finalized in the next few weeks, and the details will be published. ____________________

Jerry and his beloved wife Cynthia have been long-time members of our Maui community; they donated the curtains we continue to use on our ark.
We received the following message from Cynthia...
"It is with deepest sorrow that I inform you of the death of my beloved husband Jerry Labb. He passed peacefully by my side on Sunday afternoon. I will miss his creativity and his kind and gentle ways. His love of sharing good times, good food, and live music with friends is legendary. He’s now in the arms of the angels."
May his memory forever be for a blessing.

JCM is excited to try out some outdoor services and events at JCM. We know that there are varying ideas on what should be allowed during these times. Decisions are being made following federal and local mandates, CDC recommendations, and . As we get into winter and more tourists will arrive and more illnesses are bound to spread, there are health protocols (not just COVID) that will help our community stay safe. We fully respect everyone's personal decisions in your own homes and lives, and at JCM, we are taking great care to not be the primary or secondary source of an outbreak or spread.
If you are comfortable, please come and enjoy an outdoor service... social distance, keep your mask on- even outside and seated, do not eat or drink unnecessarily when you are here. If our protocols are followed and resepcted, we will continue to hold outdooor events.

Our girls are equal and included in all aspects of the lifecycle event...this is crucial for both our boys (who we are raising to be good citizens) and our girls. We are proud to include any boy/girl/nonbinary person who wants to enjoy this rite of passage.
Our new program, run by Sandra Razieli, will likely begin in November.
This is more than a "teaching" class...this program will help truly prepare our children for their personal journey into Jewish adulthood in our kehillah (community).
Please let me know at admin@mauijews.org if your child will be having a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in the next year or so...we will reach out with the details as soon as they are final.

New class with Sam starts Tuesday November 10:
Mitzvot (Divine Commandments) What are the mitzvot? Where do they appear in the Torah? What is their interpretation? What is their purpose? How have they been a basis for a Jewish life throughout the generations? How can they apply in our lives, how they can inspire us, and what opportunities can they give us to feel a sense of connection?
We will look together at some of the sources and think about their meaning and relevance.
Sam plans to start with a general discussion of what mitzvot are and why they are important - Click here for the source sheet

"Two years later, Tree of Life shooting survivors are making the victims' memories a blessing...
Audrey Glickman is drawing on the words of a friend who “always said that everything in life takes two years to heal.” Ms. Glickman — a survivor of the Oct. 27, 2018, attack at the Tree of Life / Or L’Simcha synagogue, which claimed the lives of 11 worshipers from three congregations — knows it’s not as simple as turning a page on a calendar. “Some of us, as a collective, are still healing,” said Ms. Glickman, a Tree of Life member. “We had different levels of injury to begin with. But I’m ready to move on, to carry this forward and make it positive.” When Jews say of the departed, “may their memory be for a blessing,” she said, the word “for” is crucial — moving from memory to future action. “The people we lost have a legacy,” she said. “It’s on us now to continue to not only build ourselves but build on the legacy that was left to us.”" Read the rest of the articlehere.
JCM joins in the mourning and remembering of the lives of those who were murdered at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburg on October 27, 2018...two years ago today. ___________________

We are a kehilla. After Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, I (Ellyn) feel it more than ever. Even by Zoom, we were together and connected. In 5781, let's celebrate kehilla.
Yes, we are a congregation...and even more, we are a Jewish community who supports each other, plays together, grieves together, cares together, lays rocks for others with love at a Yizkor service, delivers prayer books, we are Jews together- we respect our differences and embrace what we share.
Maui Kehilla...coming in strong for 5781. _____________________
Sukkot Needs: The sukkah is built...and it needs decorations, greens, & flowers. If you and your family can help decorate, just pop over and add what you have before Thursday night...it's not the same as being all together on a Sunday morning to decorate, but that won't stop us from having our traditional and festive sukkah.
Please email admin@mauijews.org to reserve your time in the JCM sukkah, we'd love to have you! We will have the prayers and Lulav and etrog for you to use.
