Tuesday, February 23 7:00pm Class with Sam S. Mitzvot (Divine Commandments) What are the mitzvot? Where do they appear in the Torah? What is their interpretation? What is their purpose? How have they been a basis for a Jewish life throughout the generations? Shavua Tov, Purim is coming! There are many gripping tales in the Tanakh, but the story of Esther is unique in that it seems to have been written for the stage. The dramatic story is elaborate and is told by an omniscient narrator who describes in detail the location, setting, attire of the characters, and the mood for each episode. It is a story of intrigue and power plays and includes a wise man, a ruthless villain, a banished queen, a naive queen candidate, and a complicated love triangle.
Please join us: ***NEW TIMES*** Family Storytelling of Purim (Feb. 25th, 5:00pm - 5:15pm) Dramatic Reading, in English followed by a discussion (Feb. 25th, 5:15pm)
Mishloach Manot/Giving Food Packages to Friends The mitzvah of mishloach manot is based on Megillat Esther 9:19 and 22 which states that Purim was established as a day “of gladness and feasting, and of sending portions, one individual to his friend (and gifts to the poor).” There are varying opinions as to the reasoning behind this lovely mitzvah and how this principle is actually applied in practice. Bottom line it is considered fulfilled with a minimum of two portions of cooked food given to at least one person.
Matanot L’evyonim/Giving Food to the Poor The essence of this Mitzvah is to make a poor person happy. This mitzvah is an extremely important one in that it allows us to take care of the people in our communities who are struggling to make ends meet and this year it is especially needed. The most prevalent custom is to give at least enough food or money to prepare a Purim seudah/meal but any amount can be given. Please send your donations to support needy people in our community to our ED Ellyn HERE . If you, or someone you know, would like to be a recipient please call Ellyn. She will keep your information completely private and donors will not know who their donations are going to. All donations received will be divided equally between the recipients.
Seudat Purim/Purim Meal This mitzvah is based on Megillat Esther 9:17 - 22. It is generally practiced by having a festive meal on Purim with family and friends during daylight hours. This year, unfortunately, we cannot have a meal together. We wish you all a wonderful festive enjoyable Purim with delicious food! Taanit Esther/Fast of Esther Taanit Esther (13th of Adar) is a minhag/custom which is first mentioned in the 8th century, some 1200 years after the events described in the Book of Esther, by Rav Aha Meshabeha, the head of the Pumbedita Yeshiva in Babylonia. Today, some people fast, some don't fast, and some choose to water fast.
The mitzvah is actually not to hear the megillah read but for each person to read the megillah for her/himself (some add with understanding). So I like to say to myself before a reading begins that I am listening in order to fulfill the mitzvah by hearing someone else do the reading (which establishes that I am using the reading to fulfill my personal mitzvah). For those who desire a more traditional Megillah reading than we are offering this year, here are five covid-friendly options.
1. (If you have a scroll) If you know how to read Hebrew with the proper cantillations you can read the blessings and the Megillah at home, or if you don’t know how to read with the cantilations you can follow along in the scroll to a prerecorded reading after saying your own blessings.
2. Listen to a live Megillah Hebrew Reading online while following along in a book or online text (and those who say one must understand. We recommend following in a language you understand). Sof Ma'arav on Oahu is planning an online Hebrew Reading.
3. Listen to a recorded Megillah Reading in the same way. (click here)
4. Read the Megillah to yourself (or follow along in a book or online text) in the language you are most comfortable.
5. Join us for an English dramatic reading of The Purim Megillah Explained and make the intention to have this fulfill the mitzvah! https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5284619173

A note from Chaya:
Aloha
I recently had my Bat Mitzvah. It was a truly extraordinary experience. Two and a half years ago I began to study Judaism. A fascinating, revelatory study of the richness of the teachings, practices, and sometimes heartbreaking history... I want to thank the Jewish Congregation of Maui for the wonderful support in this endeavor. I was able to have a Zoom Bat Mitzvah in my home with the Torah and Ark - assisted by Shayna Nechama Naveh and Sam Shnider and encouraged by President: Sheri Levin McNerthney and Executive Director: Ellyn Mortimer.

Community Discovery The Board of Directors has been working on a community discovery for our membership. We sent out surveys, and now we are calling our members with some questions to help determine the path that JCM will take. As a member, this synagogue belongs to you...these surveys and calls are important (even hearing the bad stuff) so that we can make your community the best we can for as many people as we can. We know we won't make everyone happy all the time... but we can make everyone happy if we know what you want. 2020 was a challenging year, but it wasn't all bad. YOU kept us going and you can keep us going.
Sam S. continued to lead and teach Rabbi Bochner was Zoom Rabbi Cantor Neumann added depth to our High Holidays We went to London- no passports needed Ashley Blaker was invited into your living room We met new friends who moved here because of health & safety We all became a little more tech savvy High Holidays were shared with friends across the world Full JCM renovation inside We got to celebrate birthdays by Zoom Membership increased
It is not what any of us planned, but we are resilient, and we thrived. Yes, thrived in the face of uncertainty and challenge. We're Jews, it's what we do.
As we end 2020 and look to brighter days together...please consider a donation to JCM.
Our plans for this year are to hire a rabbi, design function space outside, get our keiki back to Talmud Torah, plan fun events, parties, and celebrations...and get back to being together.
During this year of uncertainty and challenge, JCM was a constant in our lives. We were always here, and together we will always be here.
We are member supported Judaism...we accept all Jews, all Jews are called and welcomed to the Torah, and we don't question how you want to be Jewish. This is our vision for our future at JCM. We are a Kehilla of Jews, it's that simple, and we are happy you are here.
Stimulus Checks! I know may of us will rely on the stimulus checks that will be coming soon. If you don't rely on that, JCM would be so grateful for the donation of your check... Your stimulus check will help grow our rabbi fund!

A Year in Review
Talk about making the best of it! While there were so many challenges this year, JCM and our community thrived. We prayed We mourned We sang We laughed We supported We learned We celebrated
We never stopped... we just got better.
This year did not happen the way we planned, and we did not do everything perfectly. But we are here for you, and you have been here for us.
JCM has a vital important place in our community. As the only egalitarian and inclusive Jewish community, we are necessary. As a mom with sons and daughters, I want them to have equal access to Judaism, and I want to be part of it all. We are the only community where that can happen. We don't need to be the only option, but we need to be an option.
A place where all Jews are welcomed to follow their own path to Judaism...that is JCM. Where we resepct each others' connection to Judaism, even if we don't agree or understand.
We are simply Jewish.
Jewish Together. As we end 2020...please consider an additional gift to JCM. Your membership and donations ensure that we are here today and that we will continue to be here for our children and future generations. Click Here to Donate Now!

Donations in 2020...bonus tax credit
Did you know that part of the CARES Act gives a $300 tax credit for anyone who donates to a nonprofit in 2020(check with your tax preparer for full details). Usually, people have to give a certain amount for their donations to make a difference on their taxes, the gov't wanted to encourage nonprofit donations...
JCM is a 501c3 nonprofit, and membership is a donation :)
JCM brought joy and gifts to Jewish families around Maui...With a local sponsorship, we were able to hand-deliver gifts to Jewish families around Maui. Menorahs, make-your-own-candles, baking sets, a card game...we were so sad to not have a big Chanukah party this year, and we were so happy to bring smiles for Chanukah anyway! Thank you to the Dorken family for this gift to our community.
Thank you for indulging me with ideas, recipes, funny stuff, videos, etc. this past week. Back to hearing from me once a week :)

What's for dinner tonight?
Click photos above for details... or to really explore more, serach edible menorahs on pinterest. I'm making hotdog menorahs tonight... one with Hebrew National and one with vegan dogs!
Also making... brussels sprout latkes. The sauce has dijon and balsamic vinegar, thought they may go well with hot dogs. Or maybe just tater tots if I'm too tired- it's still a fried potato :)
Speaking of latkes... My friend in MN is making #eightnights of latkes. A new recipe every night...and they look amazing. If you have a latke recipe that must be shared with the community, please let me know, and I will post them the rest of the week.
I made sufganiyot on Saturday using this recipe. Good thing I didn't make a double recipe...this could have been us!
I'll be here all week with ideas, recipes, funny stuff, videos, etc.

Happy Chanukah! Night 2 OY!...We gave my 6 year her big Chanukah gift on the first night, last night. I had to call school today to let them know she won't be there because she wouldn't leaver her new American Girl Doll. My daugher and her doll are sitting with me at shul today...Lesson: Don't give the big gift on a school night.
Kabbalat Shabbat (the receiving of Shabbat) is the mystical prelude to Shabbat. We will begin with a Shabbat mikveh visualization culminating in the Ana Bakoach (a mystical piut designed to liberate us from the captivity of the state of consciousness we endure when it is not Shabbat). We will then sing Shayna's favorite Shabbat song, Yadid Nefesh (a love song to the divine presence) and lecha dodi to welcome the Shechina into our homes and hearts. We will conclude with Shalom Aleichem to welcome the angels. She will put the words up on the screen.

7:00pm Class with Sam S. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5284619173 Mitzvot (Divine Commandments) What are the mitzvot? Where do they appear in the Torah? What is their interpretation? What is their purpose? How have they been a basis for a Jewish life throughout the generations? How can they apply in our lives, how they can inspire us, and what opportunities can they give us to feel a sense of connection? We will look together at some of the sources and think about their meaning and relevance.
Sam plans to start with a general discussion of what mitzvot are and why they are important.
