We are grateful for Rabbi David Freidenreich's visit to JCM which was truly special. He graciously rolled our Torahs, led a beautiful service and facilitated a meaningful discussion. This allowed our community members and visitors to engage with one another about how we mourn and navigate through the devastating news of the Israel War and any recent losses.
We are grateful to our board members who were able to join us especially Gabe Crane who arranged Rabbi David's visit. We appreciate the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation that supported his visit to help our community grow and explore what Shabbat could look like for JCM in the future. A word from our Board President , Dorothy Tolliver....
The Jewish Congregation of Maui stands in solidarity with the people of Israel during these harrowing times. We are deeply grieved and profoundly concerned by the ongoing crisis that has engulfed our extended family in Israel.
Israel has the indisputable right to defend itself against the Iran-backed Hamas terror organization. The missiles aimed at Israeli towns and the terrorists infiltrating villages are no less than war crimes as they target civilians. We stand with Israel. In the spirit of Aloha, and with a heavy heart, we extend our sincere condolences to all the families affected by this conflict here in Hawaii, in Israel and Gaza.
We send our condolences to the families of the murdered. We pray for a swift resolution to this conflict, the speedy return of the hostages, and full recovery for the wounded. Let our prayers be for an enduring peace, security, and a brighter, more compassionate future for all peoples of the region and our world.
Mahalo nui loa,
Dorothy

As we've witnessed from afar the terrible atrocities that have been committed in our beloved homeland of Israel, may the Jewish Communities here on Maui and throughout the nation stand in solidarity for the violence to stop and pray for the souls of innocent lives lost, strength and protection of those who survived and for peace...
Holy One of blessing, We pray for the soldiers who are called to defend the people of Israel. Keep them safe. When they are weary give them strength. When they are scared give them courage. May they find strength and faith in the days ahead.
Holy One of blessing, We pray for the people of Israel who long to live under the canopy of peace. Keep them safe. When they are threatened protect them from harm. When they are wounded and bereaved grant them healing and comfort.
May they find strength and courage in the days ahead. May our voices carry prayers of hope that the people of Israel know that they are not alone. Give us strength and know that there is nothing more sacred than peace. Grant us Faith. Courage. Wisdom.
- Rabbi Karyn D. Kedar
May you and your loved ones continue to be well and safe wherever you are.
With much Aloha and Pono.

Mahalo to those who time out of their busy schedules to join us for Why and Wine under the Sukkah. We had a great time coming together as a community in our Sukkah to celebrate the harvest, our successful high holidays and this beautiful year. Now is the time to get involved with offering something at JCM! This community lives through its volunteers and interest driven activities. What do you want to offer this year at the shul? What would you like to see? Reach out to us via Kalo in the office or to any of our board members to share your hopes and dreams.
We are hoping to organize a musical kid friendly shabbat in October/November — reach out to us if you would like to play a part.
There were also many calls for Jewish learning to take place in our community. Can you offer a class? Teach a text or a prayer? Let’s fill our space with life.
If anyone is interested in starting a Jewish Professionals Network, this was also brought up. Please reach out.
We look forward to seeing you at the next Why event gathering.

For those who donated time and money, thank you for your generosity. Your contributions allowed us to rent chairs, hire security to keep us safe, have sound throughout the synagogue (Bruce Sandler owner of Village Audio) and materials and construction of our sukkah
From the bottom of our hearts, Mahalo nui loa to you all. May you be blessed with a healthy sweet year ahead. L'shana Tova!

A message from JCM Board President - Dorothy Tolliver We were fortunate to have Sam Shnider, Rabbi Emeritus David Glickman, Aryeh Glickman and Cantor Martin Neuman leading our moving and inspiring Yom Kippur services. A big thank you to Kalo along with Stephanie Mallek, Paula Wolk and Maui visitors, Karen Neumann- LA, CA; Dalia Cohen - Yonkers, NY; and Elizabeth Fairly - Kansas City who volunteered in preparing the Break Fast Dinner. And another big thank you to the Vojdani family, who sponsored the Break the Fast Dinner.
Thank you too to our Board members - Treasurer: Simon Vojdani; Vice-President Happy Lefton; Barbara Cooper;Sam Shnider; Gabriel Crane; Mitch Berman; Gail Schell; Ari Wong;and our CommunityManager Kalo and volunteers who have worked so hard so that we could have had these High Holiday services in our synagogue.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are all about accepting ourselves as being perfectly imperfect. It is about letting go of last year and so many yesterdays in order to live today and reach tomorrow. It is about asking for help when we need it and knowing how to accept the love and support of those there to catch us when we fall. It is a time for forgiveness. This is the year that our congregation and friends will be healing from the trauma of the Maui fires.
It is a time to put aside past differences and come together as a community. We need unity and not division. We need to provide emotional and spiritual support to those who have lost their homes, their businesses, their way of life and their loved ones. We need to rebuild our community. Our JCM Congregation has been a one such conduit in bringing relief in the form of donated funds, goods and services to our congregants and the Maui community in need of help and assistance. Kalo, in particular, has spent many hours coordinating this assistance along with our Tzedakah Committee of Mitch Berman and Sam Shnider.
This year will also be a defining one for our community. We no longer have a resident Rabbi or a fixed schedule of services. We will be relying on each other, on Lay Leaders and visiting Rabbis for our religious and community services. We understand that you may decide not to come to the synagogue during the year but there may well come a time when you do need the synagogue. Perhaps not this year, but maybe the next. It is your membership and donations that support our synagogue so that it can be there for you when you do need it and the services provided.
Membership at a synagogue is not like membership elsewhere. It is not goods for services. We join a synagogue because we believe in supporting Jewish institutions. We join a synagogue because we care about the future of Judaism in our community. We need your participation. We need your involvement, we need your financial support, and we need your input.
We need to know what you are looking for in a congregation. We need to know what we can do for you. We need your financial support because If we do not support our synagogue, both financially and through our participation, it simply will not exist. The business of running a synagogue is not a simple one. All of the synagogue’s work does not come free or cheap. We have employee, utility bills and maintenance of the physical building to finance.
It requires each and every one of us to participate in any way possible. It is important that we have a place to pray, to be together, to enjoy social, educational, and religious activities, and to have a presence in Maui. These are the benefits of membership and that is why it is important to belong, to contribute, to participate, to assist, and to believe in our synagogue and its mission. We are counting on you and your support!
For some of you, it may only be in the form of donations. Donations which we need to keep our building open and to fund our essential services. No donation is too small. Every dollar counts... it all adds up. You will be proud that you have contributed to the support of our Jewish Congregation, our Jewish community and to the continued use and maintenance of our Synagogue. Giving this tzedakah will make this a meaningful New Year for all of us. Shana Tova! Dorothy
The Give Aloha campaign is almost at the end. If you would like to make a contribution, you have until Sunday, Oct 1st.
There has been a recent change. This year's contributions are not matched dollar for dollar like in the past. If looking to put your contribution towards membership dues, whatever the difference is from the match and contribution will still need to be paid in full for the membership level you are interested in.
Any questions, please contact Kalo at jcmmauijew@gmail.com

Due to the devastion of the wildfires that occured Upcountry, the Kula Lodge had to temporarily close due to minor structural damage and water safety reasons. However, We are pleased and excited to announce the anticipated re-opening of the Kula Lodge!
The Mallek Vojdani family have been gracious supporters of JCM throughout the years. Contributing largely by hosting many high holiday events and providing support to those in great need. Without hesitation, they opened up their lodge to those who sadly lost their homes to the fires. Despite their own challenges from the fire, they have continue to give. When asked if they needed anything since they helped so many, Stephanie Mallek replied "It's our kuleana to help"
We are grateful to the Mallek Vojdani family for their continued support. May our hearts be as big as theirs and show our mahalo and kuleana by supporting Kula Lodge. Below are the menus of their delicious offerings. Until further notice, brunch is only being served at this time but be on the lookout for updates for dinner services in the coming weeks.

If applying towards membership, please see below for the memberships tiers and the amount of dues to ensure you're own contribution makes up the difference. Please contact Kalo at 808-874-5397 or jcmmauijews@gmail.com if you have any questions
Mahalo for you Kokua!
Mahalo nui loa to the members who have renewed their membership for 2023/2024 and those who have donated. We are very grateful for your support.
Memberships are a large part of what sustains The Jewish Congregation of Maui. Without it we would not be able to provide services especially on High Holidays or continue the Talmud Torah for the next generation.
To help you determine the best membership for you, the following are the different levels, dues and what it includes: Single $600 1 vote Family $960 2 votes Associate No vote
Please note that voting members must live full time in the state of Hawaii.
In addition to renewing your membership, another great way to contribute is through Give Aloha! by Foodland which starts September. More details to follow as the program nears.
If you have any questions, please contact Kalo at jcmmauijews@gmail.com

We are incredibly grateful for the generosity you, our donors, have shown thus far in helping our displaced community members get back on their feet. Your contributions have made a significant impact, but the journey ahead is still long and challenging. We need your continued support to help those affected by the recent fires.
One family that has been hit hard by the fires is the Solyns. This family of six lost their home in Lahaina and is currently struggling to make ends meet. Jeremy and Paulina, the parents, are facing the possibility of losing their restaurant due to the downturn of business on Maui. While we have been able to provide them with enough for essentials, they, along with other members of the community, will need continued support until they patiently wait for word regarding any financial aide and insurance claims.
We urge you to consider making further donations to help the Solyns and others like them get back on their feet. Every little bit counts and can make a significant difference in their lives. By donating, you can help provide them with the resources they need to rebuild their lives and regain their independence. Another way to support the Solyns is by being a patron to their restaurant, Nylos - https://nylosmaui.com/
By dining at Nylos, you not only support the Solyns but also contribute to the local economy. Your support can help keep their business afloat and provide them with the financial stability they need to get back on their feet. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by the fires. Let us continue to show our support and help them rebuild their lives. Your generosity can make a significant impact and help provide hope to those who need it most. Thank you for your continued support and compassion
If you don't give today, how can we be here tomorrow?
You may not need us every day, or even every week. But when you want us, you need us to be here.
Please give a gift to JCM. We rely solely on donations/memberships to pay our bills, our salaries, and programming. Your gift now will ensure that our dynamic leadership team has the resources we need to be here for you and your Maui Jewish community.
Give with joy, give with pride, give today.
P.S. We're not spending money and using resources to send out letters, this is our ask and our reminder to you that we do not exist without you.
It is time to renew your membership for 5784: 2023-2024
Please take a moment to reflect on the value of having a pluralistic, inclusive, community-centered synagogue on our little, remote island.
What does that even mean?
Support of the Jewish life of your choosing- without judgment
We don’t talk about levels of observance
No one is “more Jewish” than anyone else
All have equal access to the Torah and lifecycle events
Welcoming to all with a flexible dues plan
Preserving meaningful traditions and open to creating new ones
A voice in the direction your community is heading
Please meet Debbie Greenhood visitng from Albuquerque, NM with her husband; One of our beautiful Angel volunteers who helped with donation drop offs and writing thank you cards to our donors Aloha and Mahalo nui loa for your kokua!

It's a been a month since the devastating wildfires that ravaged through Lahaina and greatly affected the Kula residences in Maui. With heavy hearts, we witnessed the strength of the Maui Community and our congregation members come together to provide support to those who lost so much. We cannot express enough gratitude for your generosity during these trying times. However, the survivors of this tragedy still need continued support. We humbly ask that you keep them in your thoughts and hearts, and if possible, contribute to their ongoing recovery efforts.
Upon his visit to Maui, Rabbi Gadi took the time to see where he could be of service. He made a stop in Lahaina and came across the Lahaina Civic Center. Although untouched, the sign shows the heavy dusting of ashes and soot from the fires. At this spot, Rabbi Gadi said a prayer for those who lives were lost and those who lost a loved one. May we all to continue to pray for Lahaina, mourn the many lives that were lost, and pray for their souls and for the healing of those who survived.
Aloha and Shabbat Shalom

The Jewish Congregation of Maui Beit Shalom Synagogue Kihei, HI 96753
Two weeks ago, Maui, our beautiful island home, suffered a tragic heartbreaking loss from the wildfires in Lahaina and Upcountry. The days that followed, we saw the strength and power of the kamaaina unite together to help each other get through the devastation. The Jewish Congregation of Maui is proud to be part of this community and it is our kuleana- our responsibility, to help those in need. Many thanks to the gracious donors who have contributed towards our cause so that we may provide assistance to those greatly affected. However, the road to recovery and rebuilding is a long one and we have several Jewish community members who are in dire need.
If you would like to support us in our fire relief efforts to help rebuild their lives, here are a few ways you can help:
Donated goods. From Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm, JCM is accepting donated goods and providing provisions to those who need it. Non-perishable food, bottled/potable water, toiletries, baby food, formula both regular and sensitive, and diapers of all sizes are the most items requested. Although we are very grateful for any donation, clothing is not being accepted at this time. This need may change so please check for updates.
Volunteers. Whether you're a local or a visitor that can spare an hour or two of your time, we would love your help with administrative duties, light housekeeping and transporting donated goods.
Other donations of any amount are being accepted at: https://www.mauijews.org/payment.php. or by check that can be mailed to the following: Jewish Congregation of Maui. 634 Alulike St. Kihei, HI 96753.
Should you have any questions and/or interested in volunteer opportunities, please email Kalo at jcmmauijews@gmail.com or call 808-874-5397

There will be Shabbat Service this weekend!
This weekend Shabbat service will be lead by Rabbi Gadi Capela, who is spending his holiday rounding off his tour of all 50 US states on Maui. While here, he has kindly offered to lead services on Friday evening and Saturday morning which also includes a Bar Mitzvah.
Born and raised in Israel, Rabbi Gadi moved to New York in 1995 after completing a four-year military service as a lieutenant in a rescue unit.
He studied and graduated from Yeshiva University with degrees in Business Management and Jewish Studies
One of the things that Rabbi Gadi is most passionate about is leading annual interfaith pilgrimages to Israel. He completed a a tour with Abrahamic Reunion – a group of spiritual leaders—Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Druze—working together for promoting inter-religious harmony in the Holy Land. In the context of this tour, he met Rabbi Raanan Mallek and they have been friends ever since.
Please join me in welcoming Rabbi Gabi to Maui in person or on Zoom on Friday, August 25th at 6:30pm or Saturday, August 26th at 9:30am
Save the Date! Bar Mitzvah of Samuel Holz. Shabbat morning, Saturday, Aug 26th 9:30am to 12:00pm
Last week, Rabbi Raanan led his last Shabbat service at JCM. Yesterday, he departed for the East Coast to begin his officer training with the US Navy. Many of us thanked him for his time and service as his last days went by. However, can one ever be too grateful or say thank you too many times? Well not me, Kalo, especially without getting verklempt
It's been an honor to work with you Rabbi Ranaan. Thank you for your time and leadership; For being a great teacher of Jewish life and culture. From learning a little yiddish, preparing for Shabbatz and my all time favorite, showing me how to make Challah! Most importantly, I'm grateful for the amazing opportunity and your guidance that lead me into my new role as JCM's Community Manager and finding my purpose of connecting and creating community.
You will be sorely miss but we wish you well and much success in your next journey. A hui hou kākou, aloha and Mazel Tov!

The Jewish Congregation of Maui Beit Shalom Synagogue Kihei, HI 96753
The Torah portion this week is aptly named, "when you go out," and is especially relevant as I sit here in the Maui airport about to depart with so much to reflect on for my last sermon to the community. For the past year and a half of service to the Jewish Congregation of Maui, I think about how we have laughed, cried and struggled together.
Our Torah portion is full of commandments that urge us to act righteously. Deuteronomy 22:8 instructs someone building a home to make a guard rail on the roof so that no one will fall down and hurt themselves. Installing fences are important for safety; normally we think about how fences separate, whereas this fence is intended to keep us safe. Ethics of the Fathers 1:1 has the Great Assembly who received the Torah from the prophets saying, "...make a fence round the Torah."
The Torah is our home away from home, even when we are in exile. We can draw comfort from the fact that Jews from all over the world will read from the same text that goes back thousands of years. When we celebrate the fences that define our behavior as the Jewish people it becomes a moral compass that guides us forward.
Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, the great 19th century German Jewish sage, wrote, "In building a house, a person must be motivated from the outset by consideration for the welfare not only of those people who will dwell in it at present, but also of those who may dwell there in the future. They must therefore not permit anything in their household that might cause injury to someone else." We must think of the needs of others and not put off doing the right thing. We need to not overlook our obligations and pretend that they do not concern us.
The great Kabbalist Rabbi Isaac Luria would not recite the afternoon prayers until he paid his workers their daily wage. He reasoned: "How can I appear before the Eternal in prayer, when I am behaving unjustly and unkindly with my workers." Here we are in the month of Elul when we are called to turn out thoughts to self-improvement and repentance as a congregation.
Overall as a community, the Jewish Congregation of Maui has stepped up to help during the unfolding tragedy that we recently experienced with the fires; whether it is our Community Manager, Kalo who spent endless hours collecting and transporting goods to distribution centers or the Vojdani family who transformed their Kula Lodge into a refuge for those who lost their homes and the hungry emergency workers.
As I depart, I am filled with immense pride of our little community that does the right thing even under the most challenging of circumstances. Those who would like to stay in touch are welcome to email me at rabbi.mallek@gmail.com
Goodbye my friends, blessings to you all and Shabbat Shalom.

Elul & Shoftim: Returning & Restraint
Last night we had a beautiful last Torah study with me here at JCM. With it being the first of the Hebrew month of Elul, we took the time to have a deep conversation about repentance and what it means to each of us individually. We read the works of Rabbi Abraham Kook ז"ל, especially Lights of Teshuvah.
The book opens with the poem What is Teshuvah?
"Teshuvah means "return"; It is a return to the Eternal, the return to health, the return to our soul, the return to the universe, the return to a mended planet, the return to happiness, the return to home."
Such a return involves knowing how to practice restraint. We learn this from the weekly Torah portion which predicts that a day will when a new political power will emerge. The People will demand a king, a powerful leader. And not just any king, but “a king…as do all the nations” (Deut. 17:14) - i.e., the person to whom "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." The Torah seeks to limit the power of the kind so that such a king will not truly be like those of all the nations - a tyrant, elevated above the people. Our Torah portion demands that the king be subject to laws of morality and justice; that he remember that there is a King of kings above him; that he not take many wives, or accrue horses, and possessions.
We must practice restraint because as human beings we are motivated by deep urges that can get out of control very quickly. To translate the above lessons about the king to our lives, we must learn how to retrain our innate desire for power, our possessiveness, our tendency to exploit people & nature and our urge to control.
A Kabbalistic interpretation teaches us that the proper way to understand Job 26:7 is that the Eternal suspended the earth through restraint instead of the literal meaning of the word בלי-מה: 'nothing'). The Talmud (BT Chulin 89a) references this verse:
Rabbi Ile’a says: The world endures only in the merit of one who restrains themselves during a quarrel, as it is stated: “He hangs the earth upon nothing. Rabbi Abbahu says: The world endures only in the merit of one who renders themselves as if they were non-existent, as it is stated: “And underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27), i.e., one who considers themselves to be underneath everything else is the everlasting arm that upholds the world.
The power of a person who can retrain themselves during a quarrel is what keeps our world spinning. When we have the ability to negate our ego, we are actually elevated above ourselves.
Shabbat Shalom and Hodesh Tov (Happy New Month of Elul).
Mahalo nui loa to the members who have renewed their membership for 2023/2024 and those who have donated. We are very grateful for your support.
