Where do they appear in the Torah? What is their interpretation? What is their purpose? How have they been a basis for a Jewish life throughout the generations? How can they apply in our lives, how they can inspire us, and what opportunities can they give us to feel a sense of connection? We will look together at some of the sources and think about their meaning and relevance. Sam plans to start with a general discussion of what mitzvot are and why they are important.

Shavuot (Feast of Weeks) commemorates the revelation of the Torah on Mt. Sinai to the Jewish people, and occurs on the 50th day after the 49 days of counting the Omer. Shavuot is one of the three biblically based pilgrimage holidays known as the shalosh regalim. It is associated with the grain harvest in the Torah.
We hope your Shavuot is filled with delicious food, new knowledge, and deep meaning. Chag Sameach!

Monday, May 17 9:30 am-11:00am https://raziyoga.com/moving-with-shavuot-v2 Moving with Shavuot: An Embodied Experience led by Sandra Razieli Celebrate Shavuot by embodying the attributes (sephirot) that are paired with the counting of the Omer. We will begin with a short discussion and then we will experience the sephirot through multiple movement modalities including yoga, gentle dance and neuro-centric practices. The physical practices will be gentle but require the ability to move from the floor to standing. All are welcome.

I'm kvelling to wish a huge MAZAL TOV to Rabbi Shayna!
On Thursday, May 6, surrounded (on zoom) with friends and colleagues from around the globe, Shayna earned her smicha. Shayna has been a cornerstone of our Jewish community for many years, and we wish her continued success and joy in this new role of Rabbi.
On a personal note, Rabbi Shayna has been a source of education and a commpassionate ear when I have needed one these past few years. She has an easy way of explaining difficult text and Jewish law and I appreciate every brainstorm session and that she still picks up the phone when she sees it's me on the other end- I often want something, and I need it yesterday. Toda Raba for your guidance, leadership, and freindship. ~Ellyn
To contact Rabbi Shayna, please reach her at jewishspirituality@gmail.com

Want to say a prayer of gratitue and appreciation for getting your COVID vaccine?
Here are just two examples...for other prayers, please go to ritualwell.org or opensiddur.org. There are many prayers and intentions you can find on these sites that you can say while receiving or waiting for your vaccine.
From the Rabbinical Assembly:
בהודיה והוקרה לאל הרופא לשבורי לב ומחבש לעצמותם התודה וההוקרה שהשראת לרופאים ולמדענים את החכמה בינה ודעת להכין חיסון זה לפננו יהי רצון מלפניך שבחיסוני זה אזכה לשמור ולרפא נפשות כל חי ולזכות במצוות המציל נפש אחת ברוך הרופא כל חולים
With gratitude and thanksgiving to The Healer of broken hearts and restorer of broken bones, appreciation and thanks for inspiring the medical teams and scientists granting them the wisdom, knowledge and expertise to prepare this vaccine for all of us. May it be your will that with my vaccination I will be granted the ability to heal and keep safe humankind and be granted the privilege to fulfill the mitzvah of one who saves a life. Blessed are you Healer of all who are sick. _____
This blessing begins with words from the prayer Asher Yatzar, a morning blessing thanking God for the miracle of our bodies. This version notes that just as the pandemic is worldwide, so too are God’s human partners in creating, distributing, and administering these vaccines.
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the Universe, who heals all flesh, working wondrously through human hands.

Tuesday, March 30 7:00pm Class with Sam S. Mitzvot (Divine Commandments) What are the mitzvot? Where do they appear in the Torah? What is their interpretation? What is their purpose? How have they been a basis for a Jewish life throughout the generations? How can they apply in our lives, how they can inspire us, and what opportunities can they give us to feel a sense of connection? We will look together at some of the sources and think about their meaning and relevance. Sam plans to start with a general discussion of what mitzvot are and why they are important.

Link to online survey: www.wardresearch.com/jcs Jewish Community Services (JCS) has commissioned a statewide needs assessment, funded by the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Foundation. The purpose of this needs assessment is to identify the health and human service needs of those in Hawaii who self-identify as Jewish, whether affiliated or unaffiliated. The first phase was interviews and focus groups, and we are now moving into the survey phase.
The survey phase serves a very important goal of the study: to estimate the number of Jewish people in Hawaii who have needed different types of health and human service assistance. So to accomplish this, we have designed an online survey that we want to get out to as many Jewish people in Hawaii as possible.
We are asking you to please distribute the survey link to all Jewish people in Hawaii on your email list. Please encourage them to share the link with others they may know, particularly those who may not be known to congregations on your island. Responses to the survey are completely anonymous, there are no personally identifying questions, and data will only be reported in aggregate. We at Ward Research will be tabulating all of the data.
