RESERVE THE DATE! SATURDAY, MAY 20, 2023, 12:00 PM TO 2:00PM at BARNES & NOBLE BOOKSELLERS KAHULUI, MAUI Diana Saltoon presents My Sister Meda, A Memoir of Old Singapore
My Sister Meda, A Memoir of Old Singapore by Diana Saltoon describes her family growing up in Singapore within a Sephardic Jewish Community during pre-war and post-WW2.
Diana depicts the history of an enclave of Sephardic Jews that arrived and settled on the island, calling their community the Mahalla. This memoir revolves around the author’s family, love, relationships, and particularly her sister Meda. The author brings to light a Singapore that few in today’s world know and the phenomenal harmony that existed between the country’s diverse, multicultural population under the umbrella of colonial rule. She then shows a darker side of Singapore – the Japanese occupation of the island during WW2, and in particular, her family’s internment at Sime Road Camp. But it is her sister Meda who changes their lives and ultimately provides a way for the family’s exodus from the East to the West.
“…this rich mosaic – combining a historical and cultural portrait with an interesting and curious family saga – is both touching, educational, and entertaining. The way that old Singapore opened its doors to foreigners fleeing persecution is an inspiring story.” -Ilene Moskowitz, Israel

Unity of Opposites A Study in Ethics of the Elders
"All Israel has a share in the World to Come" (From the introductory prayer to be read before studying Ethics of the Fathers, traditionally read between Passover and Shavuot).
Rav Abraham Isaac Kook said the following in his commentary on the prayer book: All Israel, the entire nation, is one unit, one soul, from beginning to end - from the highest peak of the most eminent soul in the first generation unto the depths of the lowliest soul in the last generation. They all share in one Unity. They all draw from the Root of the future beatitude which awaits the entire world, and they all have a share in the world to come, towards which their inner desires and longings are directed. In this holy, celestial unity, there is no distinction between the collective and the individual. The general light illuminates all of the parts, each of which merits to partake of the fortune of the collective.
The stature and welfare of the individual depend upon the quality of his or her tie to the collective by virtue of the Torah, the mitzvot, good character traits, faith, inner emotional attachment, and, above all, the inherent, inner supernal quality whose force increases through action and deep, pure thought. The more cohesive the bond joining the entire collective to the soul of each person, the more the light of the world to come shines in his spirit and soul, improving and elevating the soul (Olat Re'iyah II, p. 157).
We live at a time when it is challenging to see how it is possible for a Collective to encompass parts that are diametrically opposed, politically, spiritually or religiously. The principle of the Unity of Opposites is related to the notion of non-duality in a deep sense. It defines a situation in which the existence or identity of a thing (or situation) depends on the co-existence of at least two conditions which are opposite to each other, yet dependent on each other and presupposing each other, within a field of tension.

Tazria/Metzora: Finding a Way to Self Reflect
"As for the person with a tzara'at affection: the clothes shall be torn, the head shall be left bare, and the upper lip shall be covered over; and that person shall call out, 'Impure! Impure!' The person shall be impure as long as the disease is present. Being impure, that person shall dwell apart—in a dwelling outside the camp." Leviticus 13:45-46
Rabbinic tradition connected tzara'at with the sin of "evil speech," - slander and gossiping. Sadly, in our times were such a disease to manifest itself in those who say negative comments about others, we would all be afflicted by it. The moral guidance of the rabbinic tradition is that this affliction relates more to the soul than the body.
When we learn above that one who contracts tzara'at must be sent into isolation outside the camp, Rabbi Adin Steinsalz teaches: "When one is isolated with tzara'at, one remains alone and only then can one truly ponder one's own faults. Only after one is told that s/he is beset with faults and is isolated with them, can s/he begin to grapple with them until they disappear."
It is the isolation that gives an opportunity for self-reflection and helps one to confront their moral shortcomings. When someone is isolated, there is no one to compare oneself against. The isolated person suddenly realizes that s/he must self-judge without the benefit of having someone else to look down upon.

Moments from the Yom HaShoah Service at Temple Emanu-El in Honolulu, Hawaii on April 16, 2023.
In Integral Halachah, Reb Zalman Schechter Shalomi ז"ל explains that he dealt with the rubble of the Holocaust, and so we should not expect order and precision. Rather, he encourages us to relate to ancient questions needing new answers in this time of paradigm shift. The only way that Reb Zalman knew how to answer these questions was by creating a new, transcending, Judaism which, while remaining loyal to the past and including it, goes beyond it and grows even larger. In other words, our practice must always reference the larger purpose of the Jewish people in the world, our commitment to the Eternal and to what we call Tikkun Olam, to being agents of redemption. We now also know that we are not alone in this commitment, but part of something greater, a sharing with other people and paths.
That was exemplified last night when Reverend Masanari Yamagishi from the Japanese Buddhist tradition lit the seventh candle honoring the Righteous Gentiles. Honoring Chiune Sugihara (杉原 千畝, 1 January 1900 – 31 July 1986), a Japanese diplomat who served as vice-consul for the Japanese Empire in Kaunas, Lithuania. During the Second World War, Sugihara helped thousands of Jews flee Europe by issuing transit visas to them so that they could travel through Japanese territory, risking his job and the lives of his family. The fleeing Jews were refugees from German-occupied Western Poland and Soviet-occupied Eastern Poland, as well as residents of Lithuania. In 1985, the State of Israel honored Sugihara as one of the Righteous Among the Nations for his actions. He is the only Japanese national to have been so honored. The year 2020 was "The Year Chiune Sugihara" in Lithuania. It has been estimated as many as 100,000 people alive today are the descendants of the recipients of Sugihara visas. Blessed be those who stand with us to say, "Never Again."

Shemini: Divine vs. Human Fire
Fire came forth from before the Eternal and consumed the burnt offering and the fat parts on the altar. And all the people saw, and shouted, and fell on their faces." (Leviticus 9:22)
When the priests (Cohens) first completed the preparation of the sacrifices on the altar, there was no fire. Suddenly, a fire appears out of seemingly nowhere and consumes all of the sacrifice. It surprised the people so much that they shouted and fell on their faces.
There was no flint, or match or anything else that could have caused the fire. The mystical fire came forth from the unknown!
And then there is a different kind of fire:
"Now Aaron’s sons Nadav and Avihu each took his fire pan, put fire in it, and laid incense on it; and they offered before Adonai alien fire, which had not been enjoined upon them" (Leviticus 10:1).
The results of this experiment were disastrous. Instead of the mystical fire coming forth from the unknown and burning up the sacrifices, it consumed the sons of Aaron. We can understand the difference between the types of fire as two states of awareness. One is eternal and connected to the Divine in origin and the other is human, relative and driven by service to the human ego. Continued here...

The Multicolored Tradition that is Judaism
Upon travelling to Israel it becomes very clear that there are many different types of Jews. Growing up in America, many have the idea that all of us came from Fiddler on the Roof or Ashkenazi Judaism. There is so much more out there! Sephardic, Ethiopian and Mizrachi Jews have their own special traditions and I always enjoy celebrating them.
This Thursday at 8pm, after our study on how Judaism views the Messiah, we will make what are called Moflettas and celebrate our own Mimouna, a traditional Maghrebi (Moroccan) celebration dinner. It is held the day after Passover, marking the return to eating leavened bread which was forbidden throughout the week of Passover.
The beginning of a Mimouna occurs when all the relatives enter a home and toss coins and candy at the children. Mixed into the coins and candy are blades of grass. What is the meaning of this custom? It is a re-enactment of the joy the Israelites experienced when they crossed the Red Sea and gained their freedom from the servitude in Egypt. The Torah informs us that the Israelites left with gold and silver that had been given to them by the Egyptians. When they crossed the sea, they walked through the reeds. When they got to the other side, they were sustained by the sweet-tasting mannah.
In Mizrachi Jewish custom, the money tossed to the children reminds us of the gold and silver the Israelites took with them as they left Egypt. The blades of grass recall the reeds at the sea. The candy symbolizes the mannah. Just as the Israelites rejoiced and sang at their redemption, so our celebration included great joy.
The closing days of Pessah focus on the theme of redemption. The Torah reading of the 7th day relates the story of the exodus and the Song of Moses. The haftarah of the 8th day is from the prophet Isaiah and describes the ultimate messianic redemption.
We were redeemed in antiquity; we will be redeemed in the future. But what about now?
The “money throw” at the end of Pessah teaches that we have the ability to give our children and grandchildren a spirit of happiness and excitement in their Jewishness. We can remind ourselves of past redemption, and that we ourselves must play a role in maintaining a vibrant, creative and happy Jewish life until the future redemption.
When parents and grandparents celebrate their Jewish lives with happiness and optimism, they transmit these positive values to their children and grandchildren. And that is a key to our Jewish survival until now. And it is a key to the continued flourishing of Jewish life as we await the messianic time.
Moadim Le'Simcha, have a happy rest of Passover and hope you will join us for some sweets. You are welcome to throw coins at the JCM Tzedakkah boxes!

Tzav: Shabbat HaGadol - Zealotry vs. Compromise
The Shabbat before Passover is called Shabbat HaGadol, “The Great Shabbat.” The first Shabbat HaGadol took place in Egypt five days before the Israelite Exodus.
The Tur (an important Halakhic code composed in Spain by R. Yaakov ben Asher 1270–1340) states:
The lamb was the Egyptian deity. Many Jews, after 210 years of immersion within Egyptian civilization, had also adopted this animal as their god. When the Eternal commanded that a lamb be set aside and tied to the bed for four days in anticipation of sacrifice, the Israelites abandoned their idolatrous practice and courageously fulfilled this commandment in the eyes of the Egyptian people, thereby demonstrating their complete trust and faith in the Eternal. Nothing could have been more abominable to the Egyptians, for their god was to be slaughtered. Nevertheless, miraculously the Egyptians were unable to utter a word or lift a hand. They watched helplessly as their god was being prepared for slaughter. This miracle was a great miracle (nes gadol) and gives this Shabbat its name.
The response to idolatry in the times of the Bible was quite fundamentalist. Our prophets raged against other deities. A famous narrative in the first book of Kings tells of how Elijah stood up to Baal and brought down fire against his opponents. Over time, something changes and this can be seen in the Haftarah we read this Shabbat from the Book of Malachi.
Little is known about Malachi. Some Sages think he was none other than Mordechai from the story of Purim, and others claim that he was Ezra the Scribe, who was his contemporary. Either way, the Book of Malachi is the last book of prophecy, just as prophecy in Israel came to an end in the 4th century BCE, and just before the Sages took over the Jewish scene.
Here are the final verses of Malachi’s prophecy:
“I will send the prophet Elijah to you before the coming of the awesome, grand day of the Eternal. He shall reconcile parents with children and children with their parents, so that, when I come, I do not strike the whole land with utter destruction.” (Malachi 3:23-24). Continued here...

Leviticus: How can the idea of us being a ‘kingdom of priests’ contribute to a society dedicated to justice for all?
As we begin to read the Book of Leviticus, we begin to think about the role that priests had among the Israelites. While it is true that the priesthood of the people of Israel was hereditary to the descendants of Aharon, we all feel connected to the idea of a priesthood through verses such as:
“You shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the children of Israel” (Exodus 19:6)
How many of us really know the meaning of the term ‘kingdom of priests and a holy nation’? Do we need to take responsibility at some level to be recognized as such by the rest of the nations? Preceding this verse is a conditional statement:
“Now then, if you will obey Me faithfully and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession among all the peoples. Indeed, all the earth is Mine” (Exodus 19:5)
Rabbi Elazar (Yalkut Shimoni 959:36): “Greater is one who does righteousness and justice than one who has sacrificed all the sacrifices as is said: ‘To do what is right and just Is more desired by the Lord than sacrifice.’” (Proverbs 21:3). The importance of “doing righteousness and justice” is greater in the eyes of the Lord than even the one who makes all the sacrifices in a perfect way as described by the Book of Leviticus. And therefore, before we think about how to build the Temple today, we should instead be focusing on how to build a society based on justice. Continued here...

Madrichim (Teen Guides) have begun helping the younger students learn Hebrew. It was amazing to see how well the younger students responded to the teens as they sat with and helped them learn Hebrew from our new Aleph Champs curriculum. This week the teens prepared to lead the Chocolate Seder that we hope every one will enjoy in two weeks as we prepare for Passover!

Parshat VaYakhel-Pikudei - Lessons from Instability
It was only after the incident of the golden calf when the community struggled with divisiveness, disillusionment and a sense of failure that Moses called the whole community to assemble. Why couldn't this have happen beforehand? What was it about the incident of the golden calf that prepared the Nation of Israel to embark forward on their spiritual and practical mission of becoming a nation? What is it about brokenness that forges a community to become stronger than it was before?
Just as our ancestors in the Wilderness longed for a G!d of stability and safety, so do we. This longing is completely understandable. The Israelites have just been uprooted from their homes in Egypt, thrown into the Wilderness, and are living in temporary huts. One moment they have water, and the next they don’t. One moment food is guaranteed, and the next moment they are dependent on the mercy of the heavens. They have no idea what tomorrow will bring, where they are going, or when they will arrive.
We have a deep fear of change that is built into our psyche. Anything resembling change triggers our deepest fears and we must instantly decide whether or not we want to be part of it or push it forever out of our lives. And yet, the longing for a G!d of stability is very problematic. Stability is not part of what the Eternal is promising us. Continued here...

Last year when we read Ki Tissa, we were full of hope that the future was full of promise for JCM’s success. The Golden Calf was a theoretical lesson to be learned from. I spoke of the Japanese form of art called kintsukuroi or “to repair with gold”. It is the art of repairing pottery with gold or silver lacquer and understanding that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken. The hope was that the brokenness was behind us. Instead we were, and in many ways still are, as a congregation and certainly as a people in the midst of brokenness.
And so how do we emerge from the brokenness? The builder of the Tabernacle, Bezalel, can perhaps guide us. The Eternal spoke to Moses, saying, “See, I have singled out by name Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. I have endowed him with a divine spirit of skill, ability, and knowledge in every kind of craft; to make designs for work in gold, silver, and copper” (Exodus 31:1-4). Our Sages said that Bezalel’s wisdom emanated from being in the Shadow of the Eternal (which is the literal meaning of his name: Bezalel), thus named for his ability to connect the words with which the heavens and the earth were created” (Yalkut Shimoni).
Bezalel’s great ability was to know the secrets of linking one thing to another; how everything in the world - from the invisible atomic level to the level of human beings, connects in an organic way, so that the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. Every connection is an art. Every link is a miracle, from the electron connecting to a proton and creating an atom to the interpersonal connections we seek between one another. Continued here...

Purim: Was Haman really from Amalek?
The relationship between written and oral Torah has been a central theme of my Thursday classes here at JCM. The Oral Torah (דרש) brings life to the Torah and this in turn is how Jews understand the Bible. One of our beloved legends about Purim is called the Second Targum. It is an Aramaic translation ("targum") that elaborates on the Book of Esther and embellishes the Biblical account with new material that does not seem directly related to the Esther story.
It is here that the Rabbinic belief explains how Haman descends from Amalek. The source call him "Haman the son of Hamedatha, descended from Agag the son of Amaleq." His lineage is presented as follows as follows: "Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, son of Khada, son of Kuza, son of Alipilot, son of Dios, son of Diosos, son of Peros, son of Ma'dan, son of Bala'qan, son of Antimiros, son of Hadrus, son of Shegar, son of Negar, son of Parmashta, son of Vaizatha, son of Agag, son of Sumqar, son of Amalek, son of a concubine of Eliphaz the son of Esau". There must be several generations omitted between Agag, who was executed by Samuel the prophet in the time of King Saul, and Amalek, who lived several hundred years earlier. Furthermore, according to the first Book of Chronicles 5:41-43, "King Hezekiah of Judah... destroyed the last surviving Amalekites."

Tetzaveh (Zachor)
Last week we read about the building of the Tabernacle and this week we meet those who work in it, the Cohens, or the Priests. This is a caste whose sole function is to bring the people closer to their Creator. And they do this dressed in very specific clothing:
"Make sacral vestments for your brother Aaron, for dignity and splendor... These are the vestments they are to make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a fringed tunic, a headdress, and a sash. They shall make those sacral vestments for your brother Aaron and his sons, for priestly service to me." -Exodus 28:1-4
It is interesting that in non-leap years we always read this Torah portion before Purim. There is a direct link between clothes and costumes. Every costume is a form of clothing, and perhaps every outfit is a costume. In Hebrew, the word for clothes (beged) and for betrayal or deceit (begida) share the same root: ב-ג-ד. The word for costume תחפושת also has several meanings. Its root is ח-פ-ש which can also mean "to search." Continued here...

Mark was a long-time member of JCM - and was not only a talented chef but a great man. He was (and always will be) a legend on Maui and his craft will undoubtedly be remembered worldwide. Our sincerest condolences go out to the Ellman family… we shall all be mourning this tragic loss with you. May the Eternal be with you in this time of need, and bring you the utmost in peace and comfort. You can view Chef Ellman's biography here. Rest in Love, Chef.

Terumah: Giving for the Future of JCM I would like to thank Joe Narrowe for his help with this week's Torah portion
Our Torah portion this week is Terumah ("gift" or "offering") and it tells of the Eternas instructions to make the Tabernacle and its furnishings. I have always found it beautiful to note that the entire Tabernacle was built from free will offerings from all the Nation of Israel. They were not forced to give, but gave from their hearts so that the Tabernacle could be built. The Jewish Congregation of Maui's (JCM) membership model, Giving from the Heart is built along this same principle. And why? Why should someone give to keep JCM going? Well, let's look back over the years and see what JCM has stood for.
JCM was founded in the late 1970s by Jews from diverse backgrounds, practices, knowledge and geographical areas of the world. Meeting monthly at parks, community centers, and homes, they gathered to share Shabbat, religious holidays and festivals together. Being an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, away from mainland Jewish influences, JCM persevered and formed its own Jewish identity becoming a beacon to locals and tourists looking for a Jewish experience. Today we have our own building, rabbi, and weekly Talmud Torah.
JCM is a non affiliated congregation which allows us to attract Jews from all branches of judaism—from those who are religious (not orthodox); to those with little or no knowledge of their Jewish heritage, religion, or culture; to those on the fringes of “accepted” Judaism. We provide assistance to everyone whether local or tourist. JCM accepts everyone equally. Continued here...

Happy New Month of Adar This Tuesday evening and Wednesday during the day begin the new Hebrew month of Adar. During the Second Temple period, there was a Jewish custom to make a public proclamation on the first day of the lunar month Adar, reminding the people that they are to prepare their annual monetary offering to the Temple treasury, known as the half-Shekel (today worth about $5.60).

Once a year after this past Shabbat, each adult Jew is required to contribute half of a Biblical shekel (about $5.60)* for the upkeep of the Tabernacle, or Mishkan (משכן). In our day and age, this contribution is given to a person's local synagogue. Please contribute today by clicking below. This Shabbat takes place on the Shabbat before or on the first of the Hebrew month of Adar. A happy new month to us all.
*Maimonides writes (Laws of Shekalim 1:5) that the half shekel mentioned in the Torah – the annual contribution every Jew was required to give to the Temple coffers – is equal to 160 grains of barley, which, in modern measurements, would be approximately eight grams of silver. At today's rate of approximately $21.62 per ounce, 8 grams of silver is around $5.60.
If you don't give today, how can we be here tomorrow?
You may not need us every day, or even every week. But when you want us, you need us to be here.
Please give a gift to JCM. We rely solely on donations/memberships to pay our bills, our salaries, and programming. Your gift now will ensure that our dynamic leadership team has the resources we need to be here for you and your Maui Jewish community.
Give with joy, give with pride, give today.
P.S. We're not spending money and using resources to send out letters, this is this our ask and our reminder to you that we do not exist without you.

Then he took the record of the covenant and read it aloud to the people. And they said, “All that the Eternal has spoken we will faithfully do!” Exodus 24:7
Wouldn’t it make more sense to hear what we are required to do before we do it? “We will hear and we will do” would make so much more sense. Our modernized way of life leaves us thinking that this is a strange and problematic statement. We Jews are known as a stiff-necked nation that logically leads us to think that we would never promise to hear and obey without asking a lot of questions.
The logical way that rings true to us in this day and age is if we said: “We will hear, we will think about it, and then we will do it.” In other words, we will listen to You and hear what You want from us, and then we will consider it and think about it. And finally, if we are convinced, we will obey.
Over the past year, I have been teaching that there are four levels of understanding the Torah: Peshat (literal meaning), Remez (hint), Derash (tradition from the Sages or Oral Torah) and Sod (Secret Kabbalistic meaning). Let's look deeper into this idea and see if there is a deeper meaning for why we said that we will "do for the good of the doing."
One of the principles of Torah study is that there is nothing accidental in the Torah, and therefore, there must be something about these words and this particular sequence that touches the human experience deeply.
We live in an age that an old person is required to retire and vacate their space for the young. As for wisdom, we are all taught to think, investigate, and thoroughly understand before we act. Every Friday night we sing the Lecha Dodi hymn, which includes the words “Forethought determines the outcome of an action.” But Rabbi Shlomo Halevi Alkabetz who wrote this beautiful hymn in the mystical city of Safed, certainly did not mean that human forethought determines the outcome.
Is the human mind truly capable of thinking and planning life? Is it really possible to reduce that infinite, amazing thing called “life” to the dimensions of a limited human mind? What percentage of our actions - both the daily, routine ones and the unique, creative ones - really and truly originate from a conscious process of thought? Continued here...

The Other Einstein : a novel by Marie Benedict
The Other Einstein offers us a window into a brilliant, fascinating woman whose light was lost in Einstein's enormous shadow. This novel resurrects Einstein's wife, a brilliant physicist in her own right, whose contribution to the special theory of relativity is hotly debated. Was she simply Einstein's sounding board, an assistant performing complex mathematical equations? Or did she contribute something more?

Yitro: The Commandment to Know the Eternal - A Short Text Study
"I, the Eternal, am your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, the house of bondage." Exodus 20:1 - The First of the Ten Commandments
"The foundation of all foundations and the pillar of wisdom is to know that there is a Primary Being who brought into being all existence. All the beings of the heavens, the earth, and what is between them come into existence only from the truth of His Being." Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah 1
"Maimonides did not say: believe that there is a Primary Being... [but rather] that the commandment is to know this with the knowledge of the mind, and this is, as Maimonides said in A Guide for the Perplexed 2:33, 'these two commandments... a person can achieve with their mind' and it isn't necessary to receive them from Moses by way of faith..." Rabbi Meir Leibush Wisser (1809–1879) also known as the Malbim.
I am reminded of a saying that is in most Israeli synagogues: "Know before whom you stand." Rabbi Shefa Gold comments on this idea as follows:
"These words are inscribed on many synagogue walls and are meant to remind the congregants of the seriousness of prayer. In the past I’ve dismissed this phrase as being too stern, too much like 'Big Brother' watching and judging. Yet now, when I chant this phrase, an entirely new meaning emerges. The verb ידע yada to “know” also means to “be intimate with” (To know someone in the Biblical sense). As I chant, I am called into intimacy with The Great Mystery who stands before me. That Mystery is disguised as this world, as my life. As I stand before that Mystery I am called into my power, in order to fully engage. The veil between me and the world-as-God drops away, and I can experience the intimate knowing that I am not a separate observer, but rather an integral part of The Mystery of existence."

Beshalach: Taking Initiative to Lead the People Forward
The Torah reading this week is BeShalach ("Letting Go"). In the context of the verse, Pharaoh is finally letting the people go. The people are then sent on a longer journey than the fastest way to their goal. Why? To build them as a community and as a nation. The Sea of Reeds would quite literally (albeit a great miracle) give birth to the Nation of Israel.
Before that could happen, a great lesson on leadership needed to be taught to the people. Moses was doing his best as a leader. The rest of the nation were very rational and sane in their complaints against him and the Lord. Afterall, they were stuck facing the sea and quickly approaching was the entire Egyptian Army coming to enslave the people and destroy whatever hopes they had of the future. "And Moses said to the people, fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will show you today. For as you have seen Egypt this day, you shall not see them again any more forever. The Lord shall fight for you and you shall hold your peace. And the Lord said to Moses: Why do you cry out to me? Speak to the children of Israel that they go forward." (Exodus 14:13-15)
The people of Israel must have thought Moses delusional. The Egyptian troops were coming toward them... the sea was in front of them. Being trapped, they blamed Moses for bringing them out of Egypt only to die here. Moses offered words of reassurance. The Lord will fight for you, all will be well.
Now let's think from Moses' perspective. He himself would have had huge doubts. Afterall, he too could see the reality. Whatever theological hope he had in the Lord was theory based on miracles that ended up being curses to the Egyptians who were fast approaching to end this attempt to free his people. Moses could not conceive that the sea would open and save the people.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day
Today, January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, or the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, and commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of one third of the Jewish people, along with countless members of other minorities between 1933 and 1945 by Nazi Germany. The day remembers the killing of six million Jews, two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population, and millions of others by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. It was designated by United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/7 on 1 November 2005.

Then the Eternal said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh. For I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his courtiers, in order that I may display these My signs among them, and that you may recount to your children and your grandchildren how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and how I displayed My signs among them—in order that you may know that I am the Eternal. -Exodus 10:1-2
The classic question is that if Pharaoh's heart was hardened by the Lord then his free choice was taken away and he should not have been punished. And we must remember that this was the same Pharaoh who chose to murder the Israelite boys and enslave our people.
I can imagine Pharaoh's lawyer saying, "But he was trapped in the injustice of the Egyptian system. The system needed slaves and the Israelite slaves needed to be controlled. Pharaoh was simply responding to the needs of his nation."
Are we personalizing evil or even worse, justifying it? After all, Pharaoh was a human being and thus also made in the image of the Creator. What lesson can we gain from engaging in such an intellectual exercise?
I remember once being told that every character in the Torah represents a part of our psyche, even Pharaoh himself.

Special Spiritual Evening after this Shabbat Saturday, January 21 at 7:30pm at JCM Havdallah & Melava Malka: A Spiritual Evening with the Schachters
Come and join us to learn some Torah from Rabbi Shlomo Schachter and his wife, Ahava Zarembski-Schachter.
Rabbi Shlomo Schachter received his Smicha in 2014 from Rabbi Riskin of Efrat after spending nine years studying in Israel. He identifies as a Modern Orthodox Breslever Chassid and strives to draw on the experiential piety of chassidut in order to face the challenges of the contemporary world.
Ahava Zarembski-Schachter received her Master's Degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. She moved to Israel in 2001. Ahava is an expert in post-disaster relief. While studying at Nishmat The Center for Advanced Jewish Studies for Women in Jerusalem (for 7 years), Ahava worked in Israeli policymaking giving recommendations to the Prime Ministers Office.
Today the Interfaith Talk Story took place at JCM with clergy and leaders from all the different religions on Maui. These gatherings discuss ways to provide safe spaces for members of our LGBTQIA+ community and visitors to our congregations. A wonderful outcome has been the design and production of pamphlets, created by Rev. Kerry Kiyohara of Makawao Hongwanji Mission, for LGBTQIA+ persons who attend Buddhist services statewide. It is a great resource for all of us from a variety of religious backgrounds as we consider developing similar resources, and actively seek ways to provide safe, welcoming havens within our congregations. We at JCM will be modifying the pamphlet with Jewish sources so that all can feel welcome in our place of gathering.
There are many needs of those who are feeling voiceless and vulnerable here on Maui. Do you have ideas/thoughts/concerns to bring to the table? Please email Rabbi Raanan (rabbi@mauijews.org) if you would like to be part of future initiatives that will share inspiring dialogue.

"And Moses spoke so to the children of Israel; but they listened not to Moses for anguish of spirit and for cruel bondage." (Exodus 4:9)
When the going gets tough it is sometimes difficult to listen to our leaders. We seek to blame someone for the difficulties that we are experiencing and it is easiest to point a finger at our leaders. After all, if they were better leaders, then we would not be in this situation in the first place. It is important to remember that vision does not manifest overnight. That is the main message of what we experienced in last week's Torah portion: that yes, life can seem absolutely hopeless and we are still called to believe that change is possible.
Moses' message is one of freedom, ending slavery and leaving for a legendary promised land. No matter how great his message may have been, it has to reach the intended audience successfully. If it does not, it becomes a soundbite that goes in one ear and out the other. There is so much noise and promise, especially in our modern era. "Buy this and your life will be better." Many great ideas have fizzled out of our collective consciousness because they were not able to convince a critical mass of people.

If you don't give today, how can we be here tomorrow?
You may not need us every day, or even every week. But when you want us, you need us to be here.
Please give a gift to JCM for a successful 2023. We rely solely on donations/memberships to pay for dynamic programming, our bills and the Rabbi's salary. Your gift now will ensure that our dynamic leadership team has the resources we need to be here for you and your Maui Jewish community.
Give with joy, give with pride, give today.
P.S. We're not spending money and using resources to send out letters, this is this our ask and our reminder to you that we do not exist without you.
I am very thankful to the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation for their sponsorship of the Nitzavim Hawai'i program that brought Rabbis and other Jewish leaders to Oahu to continue important conversations that you can read about HERE. This was after they supported a visit to Maui by their main speaker, Rabbi David Freidenreich of the Center for Small Town Jewish Life.
One of my central take-aways that is of special relevance to where we are as a congregation is learning how to move from SWOT to SOAR. SWOT analysis is a strategic planning technique used to help an organization identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats related to future planning. This technique is designed for use in the preliminary stages of decision-making processes and can be used as a tool for evaluation of the strategic position of organizations like JCM. SOAR, on the other hand, looks at Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results and is an alternative technique inspired by appreciative inquiry.

Grace Healey finds an abandoned suitcase tucked beneath a bench. Grace opens the suitcase, where she discovers a dozen photographs--each of a different woman. Grace takes the photographs and leaves the station.
Grace soon learns that the suitcase belonged to Eleanor Trigg, leader of a network of female secret agents who were deployed out of London during the war. Twelve of these women were sent to Occupied Europe as couriers and radio operators to aid the resistance, but they never returned home, their fates a mystery.
A light is shined on the incredible heroics of the brave women of the war and weaves a mesmerizing tale of courage, sisterhood and the great strength of women to survive in the hardest of circumstances
