Terumah: Giving for the Future of JCM I would like to thank Joe Narrowe for his help with this week's Torah portion
Our Torah portion this week is Terumah ("gift" or "offering") and it tells of the Eternas instructions to make the Tabernacle and its furnishings. I have always found it beautiful to note that the entire Tabernacle was built from free will offerings from all the Nation of Israel. They were not forced to give, but gave from their hearts so that the Tabernacle could be built. The Jewish Congregation of Maui's (JCM) membership model, Giving from the Heart is built along this same principle. And why? Why should someone give to keep JCM going? Well, let's look back over the years and see what JCM has stood for.
JCM was founded in the late 1970s by Jews from diverse backgrounds, practices, knowledge and geographical areas of the world. Meeting monthly at parks, community centers, and homes, they gathered to share Shabbat, religious holidays and festivals together. Being an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, away from mainland Jewish influences, JCM persevered and formed its own Jewish identity becoming a beacon to locals and tourists looking for a Jewish experience. Today we have our own building, rabbi, and weekly Talmud Torah.
JCM is a non affiliated congregation which allows us to attract Jews from all branches of judaism—from those who are religious (not orthodox); to those with little or no knowledge of their Jewish heritage, religion, or culture; to those on the fringes of “accepted” Judaism. We provide assistance to everyone whether local or tourist. JCM accepts everyone equally. Continued here...

Happy New Month of Adar This Tuesday evening and Wednesday during the day begin the new Hebrew month of Adar. During the Second Temple period, there was a Jewish custom to make a public proclamation on the first day of the lunar month Adar, reminding the people that they are to prepare their annual monetary offering to the Temple treasury, known as the half-Shekel (today worth about $5.60).
This Thursday - JCM Teen Program - For ages 12+ Wednesday, Feb. 22 after Talmud Torah, here at JCM. 6:00pm - 6:45pm The teens will be making pizza and watching a movie.
Israeli Folk Dancing IS BACK! Sundays 3:00pm - 5:00pm Led by Paula Wolk at JCM Ages 16+
We continue our dances this Sunday, all are welcome to join us. Come learn some Israeli Folk dances.
Once a year after this past Shabbat, each adult Jew is required to contribute half of a Biblical shekel (about $5.60)* for the upkeep of the Tabernacle, or Mishkan (משכן). In our day and age, this contribution is given to a person's local synagogue. Please contribute today by clicking below. This Shabbat takes place on the Shabbat before or on the first of the Hebrew month of Adar. A happy new month to us all.
*Maimonides writes (Laws of Shekalim 1:5) that the half shekel mentioned in the Torah – the annual contribution every Jew was required to give to the Temple coffers – is equal to 160 grains of barley, which, in modern measurements, would be approximately eight grams of silver. At today's rate of approximately $21.62 per ounce, 8 grams of silver is around $5.60.

Then he took the record of the covenant and read it aloud to the people. And they said, “All that the Eternal has spoken we will faithfully do!” Exodus 24:7
Wouldn’t it make more sense to hear what we are required to do before we do it? “We will hear and we will do” would make so much more sense. Our modernized way of life leaves us thinking that this is a strange and problematic statement. We Jews are known as a stiff-necked nation that logically leads us to think that we would never promise to hear and obey without asking a lot of questions.
The logical way that rings true to us in this day and age is if we said: “We will hear, we will think about it, and then we will do it.” In other words, we will listen to You and hear what You want from us, and then we will consider it and think about it. And finally, if we are convinced, we will obey.
Over the past year, I have been teaching that there are four levels of understanding the Torah: Peshat (literal meaning), Remez (hint), Derash (tradition from the Sages or Oral Torah) and Sod (Secret Kabbalistic meaning). Let's look deeper into this idea and see if there is a deeper meaning for why we said that we will "do for the good of the doing."
One of the principles of Torah study is that there is nothing accidental in the Torah, and therefore, there must be something about these words and this particular sequence that touches the human experience deeply.
We live in an age that an old person is required to retire and vacate their space for the young. As for wisdom, we are all taught to think, investigate, and thoroughly understand before we act. Every Friday night we sing the Lecha Dodi hymn, which includes the words “Forethought determines the outcome of an action.” But Rabbi Shlomo Halevi Alkabetz who wrote this beautiful hymn in the mystical city of Safed, certainly did not mean that human forethought determines the outcome.
Is the human mind truly capable of thinking and planning life? Is it really possible to reduce that infinite, amazing thing called “life” to the dimensions of a limited human mind? What percentage of our actions - both the daily, routine ones and the unique, creative ones - really and truly originate from a conscious process of thought? Continued here...

WE WILL BE DISCUSSING:
The Other Einstein : a novel by Marie Benedict
The Other Einstein offers us a window into a brilliant, fascinating woman whose light was lost in Einstein's enormous shadow. This novel resurrects Einstein's wife, a brilliant physicist in her own right, whose contribution to the special theory of relativity is hotly debated. Was she simply Einstein's sounding board, an assistant performing complex mathematical equations? Or did she contribute something more?

Yitro: The Commandment to Know the Eternal - A Short Text Study
"I, the Eternal, am your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, the house of bondage." Exodus 20:1 - The First of the Ten Commandments
"The foundation of all foundations and the pillar of wisdom is to know that there is a Primary Being who brought into being all existence. All the beings of the heavens, the earth, and what is between them come into existence only from the truth of His Being." Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah 1
"Maimonides did not say: believe that there is a Primary Being... [but rather] that the commandment is to know this with the knowledge of the mind, and this is, as Maimonides said in A Guide for the Perplexed 2:33, 'these two commandments... a person can achieve with their mind' and it isn't necessary to receive them from Moses by way of faith..." Rabbi Meir Leibush Wisser (1809–1879) also known as the Malbim.
I am reminded of a saying that is in most Israeli synagogues: "Know before whom you stand." Rabbi Shefa Gold comments on this idea as follows:
"These words are inscribed on many synagogue walls and are meant to remind the congregants of the seriousness of prayer. In the past I’ve dismissed this phrase as being too stern, too much like 'Big Brother' watching and judging. Yet now, when I chant this phrase, an entirely new meaning emerges. The verb ידע yada to “know” also means to “be intimate with” (To know someone in the Biblical sense). As I chant, I am called into intimacy with The Great Mystery who stands before me. That Mystery is disguised as this world, as my life. As I stand before that Mystery I am called into my power, in order to fully engage. The veil between me and the world-as-God drops away, and I can experience the intimate knowing that I am not a separate observer, but rather an integral part of The Mystery of existence."

Beshalach: Taking Initiative to Lead the People Forward
The Torah reading this week is BeShalach ("Letting Go"). In the context of the verse, Pharaoh is finally letting the people go. The people are then sent on a longer journey than the fastest way to their goal. Why? To build them as a community and as a nation. The Sea of Reeds would quite literally (albeit a great miracle) give birth to the Nation of Israel.
Before that could happen, a great lesson on leadership needed to be taught to the people. Moses was doing his best as a leader. The rest of the nation were very rational and sane in their complaints against him and the Lord. Afterall, they were stuck facing the sea and quickly approaching was the entire Egyptian Army coming to enslave the people and destroy whatever hopes they had of the future. "And Moses said to the people, fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will show you today. For as you have seen Egypt this day, you shall not see them again any more forever. The Lord shall fight for you and you shall hold your peace. And the Lord said to Moses: Why do you cry out to me? Speak to the children of Israel that they go forward." (Exodus 14:13-15)
The people of Israel must have thought Moses delusional. The Egyptian troops were coming toward them... the sea was in front of them. Being trapped, they blamed Moses for bringing them out of Egypt only to die here. Moses offered words of reassurance. The Lord will fight for you, all will be well.
Now let's think from Moses' perspective. He himself would have had huge doubts. Afterall, he too could see the reality. Whatever theological hope he had in the Lord was theory based on miracles that ended up being curses to the Egyptians who were fast approaching to end this attempt to free his people. Moses could not conceive that the sea would open and save the people.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day
Today, January 27 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, or the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, and commemorates the victims of the Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of one third of the Jewish people, along with countless members of other minorities between 1933 and 1945 by Nazi Germany. The day remembers the killing of six million Jews, two-thirds of Europe's Jewish population, and millions of others by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. It was designated by United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/7 on 1 November 2005.

Then the Eternal said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh. For I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his courtiers, in order that I may display these My signs among them, and that you may recount to your children and your grandchildren how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and how I displayed My signs among them—in order that you may know that I am the Eternal. -Exodus 10:1-2
The classic question is that if Pharaoh's heart was hardened by the Lord then his free choice was taken away and he should not have been punished. And we must remember that this was the same Pharaoh who chose to murder the Israelite boys and enslave our people.
I can imagine Pharaoh's lawyer saying, "But he was trapped in the injustice of the Egyptian system. The system needed slaves and the Israelite slaves needed to be controlled. Pharaoh was simply responding to the needs of his nation."
Are we personalizing evil or even worse, justifying it? After all, Pharaoh was a human being and thus also made in the image of the Creator. What lesson can we gain from engaging in such an intellectual exercise?
I remember once being told that every character in the Torah represents a part of our psyche, even Pharaoh himself.

Come and join us to learn some Torah from Rabbi Shlomo Schachter and his wife, Ahava Zarembski-Schachter.
Rabbi Shlomo Schachter received his Smicha in 2014 from Rabbi Riskin of Efrat after spending nine years studying in Israel. He identifies as a Modern Orthodox Breslever Chassid and strives to draw on the experiential piety of chassidut in order to face the challenges of the contemporary world.
Ahava Zarembski-Schachter received her Master's Degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. She moved to Israel in 2001. Ahava is an expert in post-disaster relief. While studying at Nishmat The Center for Advanced Jewish Studies for Women in Jerusalem (for 7 years), Ahava worked in Israeli policymaking giving recommendations to the Prime Ministers Office.
Today the Interfaith Talk Story took place at JCM with clergy and leaders from all the different religions on Maui. These gatherings discuss ways to provide safe spaces for members of our LGBTQIA+ community and visitors to our congregations. A wonderful outcome has been the design and production of pamphlets, created by Rev. Kerry Kiyohara of Makawao Hongwanji Mission, for LGBTQIA+ persons who attend Buddhist services statewide. It is a great resource for all of us from a variety of religious backgrounds as we consider developing similar resources, and actively seek ways to provide safe, welcoming havens within our congregations. We at JCM will be modifying the pamphlet with Jewish sources so that all can feel welcome in our place of gathering.
There are many needs of those who are feeling voiceless and vulnerable here on Maui. Do you have ideas/thoughts/concerns to bring to the table? Please email Rabbi Raanan (rabbi@mauijews.org) if you would like to be part of future initiatives that will share inspiring dialogue.

Please give a gift to JCM for a successful 2023. We rely solely on donations/memberships to pay for dynamic programming, our bills and the Rabbi's salary. Your gift now will ensure that our dynamic leadership team has the resources we need to be here for you and your Maui Jewish community.
Give with joy, give with pride, give today.
P.S. We're not spending money and using resources to send out letters, this is this our ask and our reminder to you that we do not exist without you.
"And Moses spoke so to the children of Israel; but they listened not to Moses for anguish of spirit and for cruel bondage." (Exodus 4:9)
When the going gets tough it is sometimes difficult to listen to our leaders. We seek to blame someone for the difficulties that we are experiencing and it is easiest to point a finger at our leaders. After all, if they were better leaders, then we would not be in this situation in the first place. It is important to remember that vision does not manifest overnight. That is the main message of what we experienced in last week's Torah portion: that yes, life can seem absolutely hopeless and we are still called to believe that change is possible.
Moses' message is one of freedom, ending slavery and leaving for a legendary promised land. No matter how great his message may have been, it has to reach the intended audience successfully. If it does not, it becomes a soundbite that goes in one ear and out the other. There is so much noise and promise, especially in our modern era. "Buy this and your life will be better." Many great ideas have fizzled out of our collective consciousness because they were not able to convince a critical mass of people.

I am very thankful to the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation for their sponsorship of the Nitzavim Hawai'i program that brought Rabbis and other Jewish leaders to Oahu to continue important conversations that you can read about HERE. This was after they supported a visit to Maui by their main speaker, Rabbi David Freidenreich of the Center for Small Town Jewish Life.
One of my central take-aways that is of special relevance to where we are as a congregation is learning how to move from SWOT to SOAR. SWOT analysis is a strategic planning technique used to help an organization identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats related to future planning. This technique is designed for use in the preliminary stages of decision-making processes and can be used as a tool for evaluation of the strategic position of organizations like JCM. SOAR, on the other hand, looks at Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results and is an alternative technique inspired by appreciative inquiry.

Grace Healey finds an abandoned suitcase tucked beneath a bench. Grace opens the suitcase, where she discovers a dozen photographs--each of a different woman. Grace takes the photographs and leaves the station.
Grace soon learns that the suitcase belonged to Eleanor Trigg, leader of a network of female secret agents who were deployed out of London during the war. Twelve of these women were sent to Occupied Europe as couriers and radio operators to aid the resistance, but they never returned home, their fates a mystery.
A light is shined on the incredible heroics of the brave women of the war and weaves a mesmerizing tale of courage, sisterhood and the great strength of women to survive in the hardest of circumstances

VaYechi: "There is nothing so whole as a broken heart." -Kotzker Rebbe
"And Jacob lived in the Land of Narrow-mindedness (which is the literal translation of 'Egypt' into Hebrew)." -Genesis 47:28
Our Torah portion this weeks opens with Jacob on his deathbed. He is an old man who has lived a full life and is surrounded by his loved ones during the last moments of his life. Before he dies, he blesses each one of them.
Our people are named after Jacob's other name, Israel: "Those who struggle with the Eternal and with human beings and persevere." There is also a Land of Israel. And our forefather whom we are named after has to spend the last part of his life in a foreign land. How is it that the grandson of Abraham, to whom the Holy Land was promised, ends his life in exile? Could it be that this fact means that the journey of our foremothers and forefathers ended in a huge failure?
After such struggle, Jacob can finally live his life in Egypt, the most powerful kingdom of the day, run by none other than his own son, Joseph. Everywhere else that Jacob was, he suffered horribly. Finally, in the Land of Narrow-mindedness, Jacob could rest his weary head.

Zoom Short Story Book Club with Laura Shulman
Laura Shulman is planning to host a zoom short story book club. You are all invited to join. If you are interested, please email her at lauragshulman@gmail.com with your telephone number and your preferred day and time for the book club. She will contact you.
The short story book club will meet monthly on Zoom. At each meeting, we will read and discuss one story from the Best American Short Stories 2021 edited by Heidi Pitlor, published by HarperCollins, and available on Amazon.
Please buy the paperback edition for $16.86 so that we can easily refer to page numbers in the text. Before the class, Laura will send you some discussion questions to consider while reading. Laura uses a method called Shared Inquiry in which we agree not to refer to any other work or personal experience, but to base our interpretations on the text alone. Laura asks that you read the story twice so that you can support your opinions with evidence from the text and respond knowledgeably to other participants' ideas.
We will read the stories consecutively so that if you miss a month you will know which story to read for the following month. The stories are very stimulating; discussions will be lively; and sharing our ideas will make us a cohesive group.text goes here!

In honor of the reconciliation between Joseph and his brothers
"We are not mad. We are human. We want to love, and someone must forgive us for the paths we take to love, for the paths are many and dark, and we are ardent and cruel in our journey." -Leonard Cohen
Looking Within
Genesis 44:18 Then Judah went up to Joseph and said, "בי אדני - It's within me my lord, let your servant appeal to my lord, and do not be impatient with your servant, you who are the equal of Pharaoh."
The beginning of the reconcilliation between Judah and Joseph occurs when Judah appoaches Joseph directly, not through arbitrators, messengers, or other indirect routes. Although he doesn't know that it is his brother Joseph he is standing in front of, nonetheless, he lifts his gaze and speaks directly to him. He points a finger at himself and says, "it is within me" - I will take responsibility for what has happened.
Joseph is seeing Judah take responsibility and it clearly plays on his heart strings. We may not be able to change the past, but we can let the past guide us to make better decisions in the future, and this is what Judah has accomplished, by looking within.

VaYeshev: Canceling Joseph This week’s Torah portion marks 30 years since my Bar Mitzvah and 4 years since I was ordained as a Rabbi in Jerusalem. Three decades ago, I had just moved from Oahu to San Diego and realized that I would need more time to prepare for my Bar Mitzvah and had to delay it from April to December. Only when I started studying with the Rabbi did I understand how much I felt like Joseph.
My earliest memories are sitting underneath trees and looking at the shapes of the clouds, sure that they had meaning. I would share this with my young friends who would look at me strangely. Until I learned about Joseph, I felt alone with the lonely understandings that no one else shares.

I want to inform you all that Thursday, Dec. 8 was my last day as Executive Director. It has been my pleasure to serve the JCM membership and my Jewish community; we have made amazing progress in the past few years, and we should all be proud of what we have accomplished together. I will remain available to help you make a minyan, play mahjong, have a chat over coffee, and participate in Jewish life on Maui. I look forward to our continued connections and paths together. With much aloha and gratitude for your friendship, Ellyn Mortimer
Vayishlach: Turning the Struggle into a Blessing
Why do the Jewish people seemingly struggle endlessly? To answer this question, we need to turn to what we call ourselves in prayer and what we call our modern nation-state: Israel. The meaning of the word Israel comes from this week's Torah portion (Genesis 32:29) when a mysterious figure is wrestling and then renaming Jacob:
“And [the mysterious figure said] you will no longer say that your name is Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with people and you have prevailed.”
Were the story of the Jewish people summarized into one verse, this very well could be it. The blessing received by being renamed Israel, or the God Wrestler, is that although Jacob’s descendants would struggle, they would prevail in the end. Although struggle and antagonism are seemingly inevitable, the blessing of the Israelites emerges through creative and inventive approaches in responding to their challenges, followed by acting in such a way as to preserve their culture and religion. Throughout the ages mighty empires have tried to destroy Judaism as a religion and the Jews as a people. Against the Roman Empire, the Jews were able to transform their religion from one of sacrifice, that was tied to a specific location (the Temple Mount), to a religion centered on prayer and a synagogue which could be constructed anywhere Jews happened to live.

Please read through this whole email... There is so much going on at the end of this year, and I want to make sure you get all the information- without filling your inbox with lots of emails ( I make no promises, but I will try to limit emails).
As always, please call or email with any questions. We love hearing from you!
Also note - Rabbi Raanan will return to the office on Thursday.
We are excited to announce a Chanukah fundraiser for JCM! REGISTER HERE
Get a sitter, put on your festive holiday frocks, and come party with us at Loft 145.
$75 per person will not only make for an intimate night of Chanukah fun...it will will help JCM keep the lights on (and pay the rest of our bills).
p.s. If you want to attend, but can't afford the $75, please reach out to Ellyn and we can put together a volunteer/trade for you :)
If you don't give today, how can we be here tomorrow?
Did you read about the school in Florida that rejected Chanukah, but has Christmas trees on campus? Read it Here. The decision has been reversed, but it happened.
A rise in anti-Semitism, an increase in Holocaust deniers, schools sending conflicting messages about religion vs culture…unfortunately, the list goes on. In our little corner of the world, it is imperative that we exist and that we keep our community relevant and contemporary. You may not need us every day, or even every week. But when you want us, you need us to be here.
Please give a gift to JCM as we wrap up 2022. We rely solely on donations/memberships to pay our bills, our salaries, and programming. Your gift now will ensure that our dynamic leadership team has the resources we need to be here for you and your Maui Jewish community.
Give with joy, give with pride, give today.
p.s. We're not spending money and using resources to send out letters, this is this our ask and our reminder to you that we do not exist without you.
You will need to RSVP...how else will know how many people to shop for?! Come to as many parties as you want. We look forward to celebrating together!

Toldot: How to Respond to the Inevitable רַבּוֹת מַחֲשָׁבוֹת בְּלֶב־אִישׁ וַעֲצַת ה' הִיא תָקוּם׃ Many designs are in a person’s mind, But it is the Eternal's plan that is accomplished.
Our foremother Rebecca was not able to have children. Isaac pleaded with the Eternal on her behalf and she was able to conceive twins. Even in the womb, Rome (who the Rabbis associate with Esau) and the Jews (Jacob) would struggle. Rebecca could not bear the experience within her so she went to inquire of the Eternal and questioned why she existed. The Eternal answered her and said (Gen. 25:23):
“Two nations are in your womb, Two separate peoples shall issue from your body; One people shall be mightier than the other, And the older shall serve the younger.”
This was part of Rebecca's existence as a mother and as a follower of the Eternal One. So when the opportunity arose for her to ensure that Jacob would receive the blessing of the firstborn, she did exactly that.
And of course, there is more to the story. Read More Here
